Burnley vs Leeds: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 29th August 2021
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Turf Moor

Match Preview:

Burnley have lost both of their games coming into this match but it is their first game that will leave a sour taste after losing at home to Brighton 2-1 despite taking the lead.

Last weekend Sean Dyche’s team had to play Liverpool away and they came away with a 2-0 defeat but at times they played some good football and made Liverpool really work for the result. If Dyche’s team can put some of that passion into this game then his side might walk away with some points. Though it is so early in the season Burnley are in 17th position.

There was some good news for Burnley in midweek though when they beat Newcastle in a penalty shoot out in the EFL Cup after their game had finished 0-0. That they went through at the expense of a fellow Premier League side should give the whole squad a boost ahead of this game.

Leeds haven’t changed from last season, that is why after 2 games played they have scored 3 goals and conceded 7. The 5-1 loss at Manchester United has to be forgotten about, they lost 6-2 at the same ground last season anyway. This was followed up by a 2-2 draw at home to Everton, which probably felt like a victory given that they were losing the game with 15 minutes left to play.

So Leeds are searching for their first victory of the league season, but they did manage their first victory in all competitions as they beat Crewe 3-0 in the EFL Cup. It was a game changed by Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison, and Harrison scored two goals with Bamford assisting in one of those. Last season Bielsa would have played his second string team in the competition so it was interesting to see the change here.

Team News:

Burnley: Matej Vydra has a knock though he is being tipped to return for this game. Kevin Long is out long term with an Achilles injury.

Leeds: The only worry for Leeds is Robin Koch who is a major doubt for this game with a pelvic injury sustained against Everton.

Burnley vs Leeds Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 4-0 to Leeds.

Leeds have won 9 of the last 14 meetings.

Burnley last beat Leeds when at home in 2016.

Burnley vs Leeds Prediction:

The questions are, are Leeds getting revved up for the season and does Bielsa have a plan B? We have seen so many times how second season syndrome can affect teams who have come up from the Championship after such a long time playing in tier two in the past. Leeds showed good spirit to come back against Everton for their 2-2 draw but then again they were at home, maybe they should be expecting more as it can be so difficult to earn points away from home.

At the same time Bielsa made that choice to give playing time to Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford in midweek and that could actually play dividends for this game. Both players given their quality have been quiet by their standards so far but not against Crewe and it might give them the springboard they need for this game.

Burnley remain unpredictable but it may only get better for the club after they suffer some more. Leeds will be hungry for the win and they will also remember their glorious 4-0 victory here last season.
