Burnley vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 26th December 2021
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Turf Moor

Match Preview:

Burnley and Everton are separated by 8 points although Burnley have two games in hand over the Toffees and form wise the clubs seem like they are in the same boat. A win would be huge for either side.

Burnley are currently in the relegation zone in 18th place but victory on Boxing Day and a defeat for Watford would see the club leave the bottom three. Burnley have drawn four of their last 5 games and their latest match finished in a 0-0 draw at home to West Ham. The club’s last victory came at the end of October and in fact is their only win so far and was against Brentford.

Everton have had their own problems with just one victory in almost three months which came against Arsenal at home. It’s been a miserable period for Everton though since September although a very depleted side did shock everyone with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea last week, this despite Chelsea being at home and taking the lead. Everton are in 14th place with 19 points and are 8 points ahead of the relegation zone, possibly going down is not yet on the cards but the club are going to need a successful Christmas time to push on.

On the road it is just 1 win for Rafa Benitez’s team and just a measly six points earned from a possible 27. The club are conceding almost 2 goals per game away from home and have the sixth worst record in the league.

Team News:

Burnley: Ashley Barnes is still out with a thigh injury, Maxwell Cornet is only 50/50 to return from his thigh injury. Connor Roberts could make a return from illness. Dale Stephens will be assessed after a lack of match fitness.

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin is being pencilled in to make his long awaited return after his thigh injury but will have to be assessed first. Tom Davies could also return. Yerry Mina looks set to miss another game with his calf and the same injury has affected Richarlison who also looks set to miss out. Andros Townsend has a foot injury and looks to be a doubt for this game.

Burnley vs Everton Head to Head:

The clubs drew 1-1 in this fixture last season.

The last 10 fixtures have been close with 5 wins for Everton, four for Burnley and 1 draw.

The last 3 meetings in a row have all seen both teams to score.

Burnley vs Everton Prediction:

Boost seems to be the word surrounding this tie and that is what both teams will be feeling with victory here. One could presume that Everton are the better team but anyone that has observed the Premier League over the past few seasons would feel this is a coming together of equal sides who could well beat each other on any given day.

Perhaps some pressure has been relived from Everton manager Rafa Benitez, a recent win over Arsenal and a draw away to Chelsea is going to get the thumbs up and for a moment a few weeks ago it did feel as if Benitez’s job was in the balance. Football can change very quick though and if Everton were to put in a poor performance here the Spaniard who wants to prove many Everton fans wrong could be in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Back to the word boost, and if Dominic Calvert-Lewin is back for Everton the forward would certainly register under the ‘b’ word. The prices are open as expected but we will back the home side to get a close victory. Everton just can't be trusted at the moment, and even though they drew against Chelsea, it could have very easily been a different result if not for Pickfords heroics in goal.
