Burnley vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 16th December 2023
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: Turf Moor

Match Preview:

You could argue that Burnley’s form has picked up in the last few weeks despite losing against Wolves in a game that finished 1-0. But Vincent Kompany’s side have also drawn 1-1 away to Brighton which was seen as a major step in the right direction last weekend, they have also recently beaten Sheffield United 5-0. Despite some better form they remain in 19th place with 8 points and are five points from safety- that safety side is the team they are facing on the early evening of Saturday in Everton, so this match will really feel like a six pointer. The Clarets are at home, the good news is their last game finished in a 5-0 slaughter of Sheffield United of course, but the bad news is that with just 3 points won from 24 they have the worst home record in the Premier League.

Everton have been a team on a mission especially after they received a 10 point deduction for breaking FFP rules, that put the club in 19th place, but they have super charged out of that position and into 17th place and four points clear of the bottom three. After a slow start Everton are having a very good season and without the deduction would be in 10th place, that is a huge improvement on the last two horrendous seasons and manager Sean Dyche is doing a great job. Of course Dyche is known as a former manager of Burnley so that will add extra sparks to the game but he will be expected to get a warm welcome from the home fans for his good service. Everton are one of the in form sides and have won their last three games with wins over Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and Chelsea. Away form has been the real surprise this season for the Toffees though and they would rank in 5th place based on this alone with 4 wins from seven games played and two defeats and a draw. Those four wins have come in their last five games too.

Team News:

Burnley: Aaron Ramsey is just 50/50 to return due to a knock, it is the same situation for Michael Obafemi although both players may be assessed. Charlie Taylor is suspended for picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. Luca Koleosho is out for the season with a knee injury.Lyle Foster is expected to miss out again due to illness. Both Jack Cork and Josh Cullen remain sidelined.

Everton: Jarrad Braithwaite and Idrissa Gueye are suspended for picking up their fifth yellow cards of the season. Andre Gomes has a lack of match fitness and this game looks like coming too soon for him but he could be back next week. Michael Keane will be assessed for a slight knock, Vitaliy Mykolenko has a slight muscle strain and will be assessed. Dele Alli remains out for at least the next 3 weeks as he recovers from a hip injury.

There is a 60% chance to see both teams to score.

Burnley vs Everton Prediction:

It’s either been all in or all out for Everton when they play Burnley but in recent games they have managed to score 8 goals in their last three against the Clarets. Burnley’s sense of wanting to stay up has ignited the players but only in small moments during the game. Can we really take their 5-0 win over Sheffield United that seriously with a manager at the club now replaced? What would that score be if the two teams were to meet this weekend? We think it would be severely different.

Everton are playing very good football and it would feel disappointing for them even to draw this game. There is a real feel good factor with the Toffees and we expect them to get the three points in what should be a hard fought game.
