Venue: Turf Moor
Match Preview:
The term ‘six pointer’ can be thrown around all too lightly but for this game is it quite genuine as these two teams get ready to face one another on Wednesday evening. It seems increasingly likely that one of them will be relegated this season and this game will turn a few more pages of an intriguing story.
Currently Burnley are in 19th place and four points behind Everton, goal difference is almost the same so isn’t an issue like Watford who are 3 points behind Everton but affectively that is four points because of inferior goal difference. Burnley had found some momentum from the end of last year and kept that up for a few months gaining some very important results but ultimately they have hit a bad run and come into this game having lost their last 4. There have been defeats against Leicester, Chelsea, Brentford and Manchester City, not easy games granted although the club would have been expected to have got something against Brentford. The worry for manager Sean Dyche is that his once solid defence are conceding goals now and we have to go back six weeks to the last time Burnley scored a goal.
Burnley’s last win came at home against Tottenham in February but their overall home record is not good with just 2 wins so far. They have racked up quite a few draws with six from 14 games but they have also lost their last 3 at home.
Everton have the opportunity to go 6 points clear and it would be huge for the Toffees who have seen Leeds just above them go 5 points clear, however Everton have 3 games in hand. But the focus will be on how Watford and Burnley perform until the end of the season. Everton continue to struggle away from home and have the poorest record in the Premier League with just 6 points earned from a possible 42. This past weekend Frank Lampard’s side lost their 10th game from 14 away from home as they were beaten 2-1 against West Ham. Performance wise Everton had improved but at the end of the day it was another defeat.
Team News:
Burnley: There are no new injuries for the club but there are on going issues with a few players. Matej Vydra has recovered from injury but has some fitness issues but he could be involved in this game after being assessed. Erik Pieters (knee), Ben Mee (leg) and Gundmundsson (calf) are all out longer term.
Everton: Andre Gomes is expected to recover from a slight knock which seen him miss the last game and he will be assessed. Seamus Coleman could come back from illness but is touch and go. Allan is suspended and back next weekend. Michael Keane is suspended because of his red card v West Ham. Donny van de Beek has a muscle injury and will be assessed. Fabian Delph is only 50/50 to return and has some fitness issues and may have to wait until next weekend. Nathan Patterson has an ankle injury and could be out for a few weeks. Yerry Mina is about two weeks away from a return with this thigh injury and Andros Townsend is out for the season with a knee injury.
Burnley vs Everton Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 1-1.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Everton won 3-1.
It’s just 1 win in the last 5 meetings for Everton when they have played away to Burnley although that victory which came in 2018 finished 5-1.
The last three meetings in a row has seen both teams to score.
Burnley vs Everton Prediction:
On paper Everton have a better side overall than Burnley and yet you sense there is nothing in this game. From an Everton perspective these are desperate times, where is that away win going to come from? Is there a point where the law of averages kicks in or at least Everton put in a sterling performance and get 3 points on the road? The worry is that new manager Lampard has not addressed quite a few of the problems on the road. The other worry is that Everton’s injury list is ever so slightly creeping up and they will have a couple of suspensions too.
This feels like a cup final and that goes for both sides and Burnley need the win. Relegation of course will not be confirmed this week but a defeat here and it is tough for any team in Burnley’s position to be thinking that they are seven points from safety. This is why the home side will be dangerous and Sean Dyche needs to find that team that produced the goods so well six weeks back.
However this means that Burnley must come forward and they are a side who are leaking goals at this time, could Everton expose the gaps? This really is a classic match where no one could be considered the favourite which means the markets are wide open. We will back with caution an away win but cover the draw on the refund for extra safety, we have two leaky defences here and a recent history between the sides that says goals will be present. Drawing is no good for Burnley so they will be on the front foot from the first whistle.
