England Premier League
Saturday 7th October 2023
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Turf Moor
Match Preview:
Burnley have won their first game of the season and that will obviously be a huge relief for the team and manager Vincent Kompany. It came last Monday evening as the Clarets beat fellow newly promoted side Luton. While Luton have looked poor this season you have to start winning games and the added bonus was that Kompany’s side did it away from home winning 2-1 in the end.
That’s the good news, the bad news is that Burnley are still in the bottom three with 4 points earned from seven games although victory here would take them out of the bottom three. Burnley return home but that doesn’t mean anything as from their four games played here they have lost all of them. They have scored just 3 goals and conceded 12 here, so it really has been a poor start in front of their home fans.
Are Chelsea’s fortunes changing? They have started the season poorly but have won their last two games in all competitions. First they knocked out Brighton from the EFL Cup and then they followed that up with a 2-0 derby win over Fulham. In that game the Blues scored two goals in just 80 seconds which effectively settled that tie. Maybe not everyone will be convinced by Chelsea just yet but it must be encouraging coming into this game for manager Mauricio Pochettino that his under fire side have just won two games away from home in a row. For now the Blues are in 11th place and come into this weekend 10 points behind league leaders Manchester City and already the club will not be looking at a league title chance and focusing on qualifying for European football next season.
Team News:
Burnley: Nathan Redmond was expected back earlier from a knock but isn’t expected back for two weeks now. Michael Obafemi has a hamstring injury and is still sidelined with no fixed return date. Hjalmar Ekdal is out long term with a knee injury. Darko Churilnov is still out with illness and Manuel Benson has a knock, he could be assessed but is likely not to be risked.
Chelsea: Malo Gusto is suspended and won’t return for another two weeks. Moises Caicedo has a knock and will need to be assessed. Mykhailo Mudryk has picked up a thigh injury although it is thought to be minor but he will have to be assessed. Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana and Ben Chilwell are all ruled out. Carney Chukwuemeka could return but has fitness issues following his spell out. Trevoh Chabolah is being pencilled in to return for the weekend after his time out with a hamstring injury but isn’t expected to make this game.
Burnley vs Chelsea Head to Head:
Last season Chelsea won this fixture 4-0.
Chelsea have remained undefeated against Burnley for the last 9 meetings and we would have to go back to 2017 for the last time the Clarets won.
There is an 80% chance to see over 2.5 goals.
It’s been 40 years since Burnley last beat Chelsea at Turf Moor.
Burnley vs Chelsea Prediction:
There will still be question marks over Chelsea even if they win this game and rightfully there should be given the money that has been splashed on the club. In the league they have managed to beat only Luton and Fulham so far, if they were to add Burnley to that list no eyebrows would be raised at all. That’s the nature of the game when you spend almost half a billion pounds on one summer transfer window. However if the Blues were to drop points here that would be a different story and the knives would be out once more.
Chelsea have a lengthy injury list in some fairness to their season, but they haven’t put in a commanding performance as of yet, even the Fulham win seemed to come about by the Cottagers looking poor themselves. But Burnley despite their recent win have been very poor this season and even worse at home. Perhaps Kompany will be working more on defence as their last home game only finished in a 1-0 loss to Manchester United but we expect Chelsea to get the job done here and make it three wins in a row in all competitions.
