Burnley vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 5th March 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Turf Moor

Match Preview:

Burnley have shown great fight in the past month as they try to keep afloat in the Premier League and yet just one defeat keeps Sean Dyche’s side rooted to the bottom three.

In midweek Burnley had a huge game against an out of form Leicester and were at home but lost the game 2-0 and felt the full force of a returning Jamie Vardy who got the winner. On paper this game looks beyond Dyche’s side and yet they have proved this season how they are able to raise their game against the better sides.

Burnley come into this game in 18th place and are just 1 point behind 17th placed Everton. Frank Lampard’s side do not play until Monday and even a draw here would lift them out of the bottom three, albeit they would have played two more games than Everton. At home Burnley have been anchored by draws with 50% of their games here finishing that way. It’s also two defeats from their last three games here, although alongside the Leicester game the other was against Liverpool so we can’t be too harsh there and it only finished 1-0 to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Chelsea have been in the news for all the wrong reasons as owner Roman Abramovich has put the club up for sale. The reason is due to the horrific war which started 10 days ago as Russia invaded Ukraine. The British government is now going after oligarchs and Abramovich is getting out of town. Of course this will have affected the team and it certainly has Thomas Tuchel who has looked a bag of nerves as he has become the media’s first point of contact about the war and Chelsea’s Russian links. The Blues looked edgy in midweek against Luton in the FA Cup and although they finally came through winning 3-2 they were 2-1 down at one point in a game where they would have been expected to win by three or four goals.

Last weekend Chelsea lost in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool with the game finishing 0-0 the Blues were involved in an epic penalty shoot-out before Kepa blazed his shot into the night sky. So it hasn’t been a great week for the club. In the league though Tuchel’s side have won their last 2 games and remain unbeaten in their last 3 games. Manchester United are only 3 points behind them but at the same time Chelsea have 2 games in hand and will still be favourites to finish in 3rd place. They come into this weekend 10 points behind 2nd placed Liverpool.

Team News:

Burnley: Ben Mee is only touch and go for this game after hurting his knee, Gundmundsson is out long term with a calf injury. Erik Pieters is not due back until next month with a knee injury. Dale Stephens looks set to miss out with a muscle injury but could be back next week.

Chelsea: Cesar Azpilicueta will be assessed but is being tipped to return from a knock. Hakim Ziyech will also be assessed for a knock. Ben Chilwell is out for the season with a knee injury.

Burnley vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Chelsea beat Burnley 3-0 in last season’s fixture.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 1-1.

It’s been 9 games since Burnley have beaten Chelsea and they haven’t won a game when being at home against the Blues since 1983.

There is a 60% chance to see both teams to score.

Burnley vs Chelsea Prediction:

There is no doubt that Burnley will give it their all in this game and they will have to dig deep. The value is certainly on the home side to get a positive result. For Chelsea one wonders if the players minds are in the correct procedure coming into this game after everything off the pitch. They have the team to win this game but Chelsea are not scoring many goals and we know that Burnley have a very good defensive record, so we could expect a tight game even if history points to more goals in this fixture.

The problem for Burnley is they really need points now, so might start taking a few more risks than normal, and this could play into Chelsea's hands, and therefore we will back Chelsea to get the away win.
