England Premier League
Saturday 7th May 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Turf Moor
Match Preview:
As each game goes by it is becoming clearer that perhaps Sean Dyche had lost the dressing room at Burnley, perhaps there is a story that will come out one day, the reason being is that ever since he was sacked Burnley have gone up another gear. Under Mike Jackson the club have played 4 games and are unbeaten, 3 wins and one draw and that record is no mean feat for a team who are trying to survive in the Premier League.
Burnley haven’t just climbed out of the bottom three they are now in 16th place after winning their last 3 games and they will fancy their chances against Aston Villa at home. There have been victories over Southampton, Wolves and Watford and the club have won 10 points from their last 15. They are of course not out of danger yet though, far from it. The Clarets have 34 points and are only 2 points from the bottom three, that bar right now is Everton and the Toffees have a game in hand over Burnley. Leeds are also in the mix and the next 3 weeks are going to be quite a roller coaster ride for all of these clubs, let the fun and games begin.
Aston Villa are in 13th place but only six points separates the teams and a loss here could worry any supporters of the club. In theory they should be safe and look to have enough in the tank but their recent form has not been brilliant with three losses from their last five games. However Villa have drawn and won in their last two encounters and last weekend they beat Norwich 2-0 which sent down the Canaries, will Villa also ruin Burnley’s chances of survival?
On their travels Villa have only drawn one game and that means that their record does not look good with 10 defeats from 17 games played. Villa have not won on the road since beating Leeds almost two months ago.
Team News:
Burnley: Maxwell Cornet remains a doubt with his knee injury but could be assessed ahead of this game. Erik Pieters has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and is 50/50 to make it. Jay Rodriguez is also 50/50 after his hamstring injury. Ben Mee is still out with a leg injury but is hoping to be back for the final game of the season.
Aston Villa: Leon Bailey is a huge doubt to be ready for this one with his ankle injury and could well be out for a few more weeks yet. Jacob Ramsey will be assessed but could miss out with his groin. Kourtney Hause is out with a muscle injury with no specified return date.
Burnley vs Aston Villa Head to Head:
Last season Burnley won this fixture 3-2.
From the last 10 meetings Aston Villa have only lost twice.
3 from the last four meetings has seen over 2.5 goals.
Burnley vs Aston Villa Prediction:
Let’s deal with the elephant in the room- Could it be possible that Steven Gerrard who has no love lost when it comes to the fortunes of Everton sets out his team to not play at their absolute best in this game and really damage Everton’s chances? Not many press will talk about those outcomes but just remember the epic battles Gerrard had as a player against Everton. Remember also just a few months ago when Gerrard as manager of this Aston Villa side wound up Everton fans albeit they did the same back when Villa beat Everton 1-0 away from home. The rivalry is clearly still there. However at the same time it appears that Villa’s poor form over the past month means that they are not exactly safe from relegation themselves this season and a win here would surely confirm their safety with a few games left to spare. They should be fine but at the same time it only takes losing their remaining games to put them right back in danger.
The clubs will meet again this month because of the earlier re arranged fixtures and Villa may fancy their chances at home. This should be a good game but we fancy the hosts to keep their form up. Villa can be dangerous and Burnley will need to be focused but for now the Burnley players look happy and that is a good sign for the club and they are a very good price considering they are at home to win this one.
