Brighton vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 24th August 2019
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Amex Stadium

Match Preview:

Brighton have started fairly strong and the objective this season is to see a more attacking side. That worked wonders in their opening game where they dispatched Watford at Vicarage Road 3-0. Their next game at home ended 1-1 against West Ham, but it was still eventful with VAR being used to disallow their opening goal, then the Hammers opening the scoring only for Brighton to equalise four minutes later.

What has been so encouraging about the side is that unlike last season they are not afraid to come forward, and against West Ham, a side that were predicted to be an attacking force themselves, they had 16 goal attempts and more possession. Four points from 2 games is very acceptable for Graham Potter’s side and they will be looking at this game, again at home, and believe they have a chance to pick up another three points.

It’s not been a good start at all from Southampton who have lost their two opening games of the season and are already in 19th place. A 3-0 away loss to Burnley was followed up by a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool, and even though the Saints ended that game with a respectable score line, Liverpool had only just played the Super Cup game in Turkey v Chelsea and would have been questionably tired. Also the Reds did go 2-0 up. The worry for Southampton is that they have conceded 5 goals in two games, if that stays for the season they are looking at conceding almost 100 goals. Of course it is too early to tell and we shouldn’t jump to conclusions but on evidence on how this season has begun Brighton are by far the more confident side going into this game.

Team News:

Brighton: Whilst the club have some long term injuries they have no new ones coming into this game

Southampton: The Saints have no injuries or bans coming into this game

Brighton vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 1-0 to Southampton.

Brighton have not beaten Southampton at home for the last 4 games and the last time they did so was in 2012 when they won 3-0.

The last 3 fixtures have seen more goals occur in the 2nd half.

Brighton vs Southampton Prediction:

Brighton are the team in better form coming into this game no doubt but history says the Saints have a good time coming to the Amex. There is real pressure on Southampton if they lose this game, because even though it is so early on in the season history tells us that once you get bogged down in the bottom two it can be extremely hard to battle out of it. Plus there is the confidence factor to question.

As for Brighton, manager Graham Potter has to be happy with the clubs start. Even though they dropped 2 points at home last weekend it was the nature of how they reacted once they went behind and that was impressive. Another big game here and we can’t go against the home team it makes no sense, but at the same time go cautious with the stake.
