Brighton vs Southampton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 21st May 2023
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Amex Stadium

Match Preview:

For all their brilliance it looks like Brighton will miss out on a top four finish. The maximum points they can get are 70 and both Newcastle and Manchester United have 66 points each and three games to play, just one slip up from the Seagulls is going to confirm no Champions League football for next season. Alas was that really the objective this season? Surely just qualifying for Europe is a huge step in the right direction for Brighton who have a solid chance of grabbing a Europa League place.

Brighton will be heavy odds on to win this game against the bottom club although they won’t want to be reminded of their last home game when they were stunned 5-1 by Everton. But they will want to be reminded of their last league game in which they virtually ended Arsenal’s title hopes by going to the Emirates and giving them a 3-0 bashing. The Seagulls are in 6th place and can’t catch Liverpool even with the games in hand unless the Reds slip up at the final hurdle so 6th place is the final position for the Europa League this season. Tottenham and Aston Villa are only one point shy of Brighton but have also played two games more and for now at least are not being considered a threat, that can change quickly and it is why Roberto De Zerbi’s side have to underline why they are big favourites to win this one.

Southampton have been relegated and become the first team to do so this season. They did give some fight towards the end but frankly could not pick up wins and it has ended up costing them dearly. Not only are they down but they will definitely finish in last place no matter if they surprise everyone and win their final two games. With 24 defeats and 24 points it has been a miserable season for the Saints compounded by earning just 1 point from their last five games when they needed the points the most. The club have actually picked up more away points than at home, four more but even on the road it is only 2 points won from their last 15. Their last away game finished in a seven goal classic that they lost 4-3 to Nottingham Forest and indeed they are shipping goals recently on the road with seven in their last two games.

Team News:

Brighton: Joel Veltman has a hamstring injury and is 50/50, Adam Webster has a knock and could be assessed but is being seen as a doubt to return. Adam Lallana, Tariq Lamptey, Soloman March and Jakub Moder are all major doubts to return this season.

Southampton: Che Adams will be assessed after his knock and could return, Valentino Livramento may miss out again due to a lack of match fitness but may return for the last game of the season, although that hasn’t been confirmed. Mohamed Salisu has a hip injury and is sidelined.

Brighton vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 2-2.

Its been 5 meetings since Southampton last beat Brighton.

Both teams have scored in the last six meetings in a row.

Brighton vs Southampton Prediction:

With Southampton down we don’t see how they can put up much of a fight here and if the home side scores early we could see a few goals. The problem with the Saints is that even when they had something to play for they just couldn’t see games through after putting themselves in good positions. They will play for pride but if you take out Everton’s victory recently over Brighton this is a club in very good form and hard to beat at home.

Brighton should win but their odds won’t sit pretty with most punters at 1.20 so it is best to look into different markets, possibly backing the home side on the handicap. Brighton could well get a few goals here too so look into possibly some midfielders stepping up to get on the score sheet for very good value.

Brighton vs Southampton Betting Tips:

Handicap: Brighton to beat Southampton with a -1 goal start at 1.62

Anytime goalscorer: Pascal Gross at 4.00
