Brighton vs Man Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 4th May 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Amex Stadium

Match Preview:

Brighton could yet be the surprise team that makes a huge splash for European football and they could upset some of the more regular sides but this game will go a long way to seeing if Roberto Di Zerbi’s side can achieve their goal. The club come into this midweek clash in 8th place and have 2 games in hand over most of the clubs in front of them but in the case of Aston Villa and Tottenham they have 3 games in hand. If all went well the Seagulls could fly into 5th place with the same amount of games played so there is much to play for and they could end up being rewarded with Europa League competition next season.

Of course football can be fine margins and if Brighton were to lose this game their dreams would start to unravel. Form has been mixed but they have picked up 3 wins from their last 5 games and they also won last weekend as they slaughtered Wolves 6-0 in an emphatic win at this stadium and the club will be happy to remain at home.

Manchester United will be playing their game in hand over Newcastle and if they win they would go back into 3rd position with 66 points and a point ahead of the Magpies. A win for United would also mean that it is virtually impossible for them not to qualify for the Champions League next season, so this really is a huge game for them. Erik ten Hag’s side have been able to go their last five games without defeat and four of those have been victories with their last win coming against Aston Villa, hailed as impressive given that Villa had been one of the most in form sides in the league over the past two months. Away form has seen two defeats from their last four however they have managed to go unbeaten in their last two after a win over Nottingham Forest and a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

Team News:

Brighton: Evan Ferguson is nearing a recovery from a recent ankle injury but will be assessed. Other than Ferguson there are no new injury concerns but Adam Lallana, Tariq Lamptey, Jakub Moder and Jeremy Sarimento all remain out long term.

Manchester United: Alejandro Garanacho has fitness issues after recovering from injury and looks set to miss out again. Tom Heaton will miss out due to an ankle injury but could be back in contention next weekend. Scott McTominay is expected to miss out as he recovers from a knock and isn’t expected to be risked. Raphael Varane has the same problem with no update given on his condition, Lisandro Martinez and Donny van de Beek are out for the season with respective foot and knee injuries.

Brighton vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season Brighton won this fixture 4-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Brighton won 2-1.

Manchester United have won 8 of the last 10 meetings.

There is an 80% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Brighton vs Man Utd Prediction:

The old rival in Liverpool, despite their problems this season are not far behind Manchester United, there is only 7 points in it and they play the evening before, it could be down to 4 heading into the last few weeks of the season, and this must be playing on United’s mind. Their FA Cup final appearance will not be a distraction yet given it is a month away and the focus will be totally on finishing in a top four position, you sense the feeling that Ten Hag wants 3rd though.

Of course these teams last met literally a few weeks ago in the semi-finals of the FA Cup played at Wembley Stadium and that game ended 0-0 and was only won by the Red Devils on penalties. It has been interesting because traditionally United have a fantastic record over the Seagulls however they have failed to beat them in 90 minutes for the past three games. Last season Brighton won 4-0 and we don’t expect that type of result from either side but do expect to see goals, this fixture normally has a lot of them and we expect to see an open game and an entertaining one. The feeling may well be to see a United victory, but that wont be easy, however all the value is with the away side.
