Brighton vs Luton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 12th August 2023
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Amex Stadium

Match Preview:

Pound for pound Brighton were one of the most impressive teams in the Premier League last season and all eyes will be on Roberto De Zerbi’s side to see if they can remain as consistent as the previous campaign. They will start their new campaign at home to newly promoted Luton in what looks like being 3 early points on the board for the Seagulls.

The bad news for Brighton is that they have lost two major quality players in the past 8 months. First it was Leandro Trossard to Arsenal and last month World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister joined Liverpool. The Seagulls have been able to bring in Bart Verbruggen the goalkeeper from Anderlecht for £16m and also captured James Milner on a free from Liverpool. They have gone for youth in attack and were able to get Joe Belmont from Liverpool and Brody Peart from Basingstoke. Pre-season has seen just one win from the four games played with victory over Brentford but defeats included losing to two Premier League sides in Chelsea and Newcastle.

Luton Town are back in the top flight for the first time in 31 years and that means that this season is actually their first in the Premier League. Those of us from a certain age will remember Luton fondly from the 1980s and it will be interesting to see how they perform in their first season back, but of course they will also be the favourites to be relegated. Almost all of their signings so far have been from clubs in lower divisions although they have brought in Marvellous Nakamba from Aston Villa and Ryan Giles from Wolves. Pre-season games focused on teams from lower divisions with mixed results although they did travel to Germany to play VFL Bochum playing two games, winning one and losing one.

Team News:

Brighton: There are no injury concerns to report at present.

Luton: Reece Burke is set to miss out with a knock, Gabriel Osho is out with a knee injury. Daniel Potts will be assessed after a knock as will Jordan Clark.

Brighton vs Luton Head to Head:

The teams have not played one another since 2009.

The last time the clubs played at Brighton the game finished 0-0.

Luton have just one win from the last five meetings.

Brighton vs Luton Prediction:

Brighton will start as favourites and have the big advantage of beginning their campaign at home. The club keeps feeling the losses of quality players and the worry is that at one point it will start to handicap them. At the same time that hasn’t arrived yet and in manager De Zerbi they seem to have a very level headed person in charge. The signing of James Milner may not set the league on fire but he comes with bags of experience and if the Seagulls were to replicate last season that would show real consistency. The good news is that they are no longer being talked about in the clubs that could go down stories.

That isn’t the case for Luton who are expected to struggle in the top flight. Their summer ambitions in the transfer window have not looked encouraging however we have seen time and again how newly promoted sides can shock the bigger clubs and get a good run going especially at home. We believe Luton will struggle in this game and in general will have a poor away record, and this looks set to be a home banker. However we will have to look into different markets for value given that Brighton are 1.30 to win this game.
