Brighton vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 14th January 2023
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Amex Stadium

Match Preview:

There may have been worries when Graham Potter left this season and Roberto De Zerbi took over Brighton but surely those have all been quashed now. Granted there have been some hiccups on the road but overall De Zerbi is doing a solid job at the Seagulls and they have won 3 of their last five games.

Brighton are in 8th place with 27 points and would go past Liverpool with victory on Saturday. The clubs last game ended in emphatic style as they crushed Everton 4-1 away from home and they have scored 6 goals in their last two games. Brighton’s last home game was a defeat but it came against the league leaders Arsenal, the game finished 4-2 to the Gunners but even then Brighton put up a fight. It is true though that home form could be better and they only have one win from their last five coming into this game with just 11 points earned from a possible 24.

Liverpool had recovered well and won their last four games but that ended last week against Brentford as they were soundly beaten 3-1. In the FA Cup the Reds drew 2-2 with Wolves but on reflection got a lucky call from VAR and on another day could have been out. The Brentford loss is just another example that this side can be outplayed especially away from home and that their nightmare season is not over. The objective for Jurgen Klopp’s side is to finish 4th at least but they are seven points from that target and have Tottenham in between them. Though we are only at the halfway stage of the season it is already looking like an uphill task for the club.

On the road the Reds have lost 50% of their games but won 2 from their last three beating Aston Villa and Tottenham but they have really struggled against sides who get stuck in and dig deep and many will expect Liverpool to have a tough time here.

Team News:

Brighton: Leandro Trossard is a doubt with a calf strain and will be assessed.

Liverpool: Darwin Nunez has a knock and is a doubt, Virgil van Dijk is out for at least 3 weeks with a hamstring injury. James Milner remains at 50/50 to return also from a hamstring injury. Roberto Firmino will be assessed with his calf but it is unsure if he can start the game. Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are both sidelined with no fixed return date.

Brighton vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 2-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 3-3.

In the last 16 meetings Brighton has just one victory.

Brighton vs Liverpool Prediction:

Brighton’s record over Liverpool is very poor but they have a great opportunity to win this game. Not only has De Zerbi got the Seagulls playing tactically well they are full of confidence and goals. But also the key is that they are meeting a Liverpool side who are really down on their luck and have too many key injuries. The problem for the Reds is that Mohamed Salah just hasn’t consistently been on his game for a good year now, yes he remains a danger no doubt about that but he can really go quiet in games now and if that happens coupled with the injuries for the Reds then the home side has a great chance of winning this game.

The value is on home win no doubt about that, although it could be covered by the handicap for extra security. Brighton at home have not been totally convincing this is true but they did raise their game against Chelsea a few weeks back in a superb 4-1 victory and they were unlucky not to win at Anfield earlier in the season, so we will be backing the home side to extend Liverpool’s misery at the weekend.
