Match Preview:

Before we talk about respective form let’s get the white elephant out of the room first- Graham Potter. The former Brighton manager who left the club after a few games this season is now of course in charge of Chelsea and before a ball is kicked this will be the main story surrounding this match. How will Brighton fans react? And of course beating Chelsea would be doubly good for Brighton to rub it in to their former manager.

New Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has no wins yet after 5 games in charge and has earned 2 points from a possible 15. However we should cut him any criticism because his team have played some good football and have had to face Liverpool, Tottenham and in their last game Manchester City, not a great set of fixtures to get your teeth stuck into when you are in the business of trying to win. Some could claim that Brighton were unlucky against Manchester City too and they played really good football in the second half but were simply overpowered in a 3-1 defeat. At home it’s only one defeat so far but their last win here was back at the beginning of September so they are due one.

Chelsea have been frankly superb in the Champions League since Potter became manager and they recently beat Salzburg 2-1 away from home. They have risen from the foot of their group to the top and have qualified for the knock out stages in style. In the league their win streak has been halted somewhat with two draws in a row coming against Brentford and Manchester United but they have no defeats under Potter so far. The Blues are in 5th place with 21 points and are seven points behind Arsenal in first place. Overall Chelsea have won 50% of their games away from home and with 10 points won from a possible 18 would rank in 2nd place.

Team News:

Brighton: Adam Lallana will be assessed due to a knock, Kaoru Mitoma is a doubt to return from his ankle injury and is only rated as 50/50. Joel Veltman has a calf injury and will be assessed and Levi Colwill cannot face his parent club.

Chelsea: Kalidou Koulibaly will be assessed due to a knee injury although it is thought not to be serious at this time, Mateo Kovacic will be assessed for a calf injury. Wesley Fofana, Reece James and N’Golo Kante are all out long term.

Brighton vs Chelsea Head to Head:

The clubs have only played each other 18 times with Chelsea winning 12 of them.

Interestingly the last 3 meetings have all finished in draws.

Brighton have never beaten Chelsea in the league, and their only win came in an FA Cup game which was the first time the clubs ever met back in 1933.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Brighton vs Chelsea Prediction:

This will be a very interesting game because Brighton will feel they have a part to play and they do have a very solid squad. This is a game that the Seagulls could win make no mistake and being at home will be an advantage. We must remember too that Chelsea were in Austria in midweek. But currently Chelsea look very strong and they will have many chances in this game to win with the players they have and that says a lot given the ones that are currently out.

The bookies are respecting Brighton and Chelsea can actually be backed at 2.50, when we would normally be expecting them to be odds on, we do expect a close game though and the best choice could be to back the away side with the draw covered on the refund. This shouldn’t be an easy game for the Blues and of course there is that added incentive for the home side to give everything in this game, however the are a far stronger side.
