Brentford vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 26th December 2022
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium

Match Preview:

In the most strangest of seasons thanks to FIFA the Premier League is back on Boxing Day, a whopping 8 days after the World Cup final and in this now non stop footballing world we are whizzing from Doha to Brentford for this lunch time kick off.

We will all need a refresher after a six week break but perhaps the World Cup came at the wrong time for Brentford who had found form. Their last game was a stunner as they beat the champions Manchester City at the Etihad 2-1 which just underlines just how strong and competitive the Premier League is. The Bees come into this game unbeaten in their last three and have lost just once in their last five, this will be another big test though.

Thomas Frank’s side are in 10th place with 19 points and are ten points behind their visitors. At home its won 3 and drawn 3 but they have also lost just once so far and even then that was against the current league leaders Arsenal so this should be an interesting showdown.

Tottenham have some stars in their team of course and they have the same stars that failed at the World Cup in Harry Kane, Richarlison and Heung Min-Son. Failed is a strong word as they all had their moments but Kane and Richarlison playing for England and Brazil respectively had their minds on winning the World Cup and both were dumped out at the quarter final stage. You just wonder if they will be suffering from World Cup hangover? However it has been reported that Richarlison won’t return until next year as he has picked up an injury. In goal Hugo Lloris surely will as he made it all the way to the final for France. At this stage it is unclear if manager Antonio Conte will select him so soon after. Cristian Romero in defence for Tottenham won the World Cup with Argentina but he may have an altogether different hangover to deal with.

As for form Tottenham left us with 3 defeats from their last five but in their last game they were involved in a seven goal classic as they overcame Leeds 4-3. They currently trail leaders Arsenal by 8 points and the Gunners also have a game in hand. Manchester United are also right on their tails in 5th place and just three points behind, so a win would be huge for Conte’s side.

Team News:

Brentford: Thomas Strakosha was hoping to return but he remains a major doubt due to his ankle. Aaron Hickey could return from the same injury and will be assessed. Shandon Baptiste looks like missing out again due to a muscle injury, Kristoffer Ajer is out with a knee injury.

Tottenham: Richarlison is out for between 4-6 weeks due to a hamstring injury he picked up at the World Cup. Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended for this game because he has picked up five yellow cards. Ben Davies is touch and go with a muscle injury but could be assessed. It is the same problem for Ryan Sessegon who is 50/50 to make this one.

Brentford vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 0-0.

It’s been 14 games with no wins for Brentford against Tottenham.

The last 5 games have all witnessed under 2.5 goals.

Brentford vs Tottenham Prediction:

Tottenham have the better side and will be the favourites to win this game but we have to respect Brentford who have been very strong and hard to beat at home. Perhaps if we were still in November this is a game that Tottenham may have lost especially as their form wasn’t the best at that time. It will however take a lot of mental strength for Tottenham to come out here away from home on Boxing Day and take the 3 points and it looks like being a very difficult task for them.

A lot of players for Brentford have been able to relax but obviously have been training and it will be interesting to see how this second half of the season maps out for them. They should start the game well and we expect them to pose many questions for Tottenham. Overall the Bees do not have a great record against Tottenham but there have been encouraging signs down the years in draws and this game may very well end up like that.
