England Premier League
Saturday 7th May 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium
Match Preview:
Both of these clubs in 14th and 15th place will feel that they are safe this season and yet both would welcome another win. There is a small threat perhaps from the likes of Burnley, Leeds and Everton who could in theory reach the 40 points that Brentford and Southampton are currently on. But it would need those three teams to find form that they have rarely found this season and one would still expect to see these two clubs playing in the Premier League next season.
Brentford’s form over the past six weeks has been stunning and it has been led greatly by Christian Eriksen who has made one of the most spectacular comebacks in recent memory. However the Bees have gone their last two games without a win after drawing against Tottenham with that game ending 0-0 and then losing 3-0 against Manchester United. Thomas Frank’s side have been in good form and dropping points against two teams purported to be in the big six in the Premier League isn’t the worst return.
Southampton come into this game with just one win in their last five and have earned just 1 point from their last 9. Last weekend they lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace and you sense that the Saints season is petering out now. Yet both of these clubs could well finish in the top half of the table and that would still feel like an achievement. On the road Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have won just three games and have won 15 points from 51 on offer. They are also conceding 2 goals per game on average away from home.
Team News:
Brentford: Sergi Canos is only 50/50 to return for this game, Saman Ghoddos has an ankle injury and there has been no update on his injury. Ethan Pinnock is only 50/50 to return from a hamstring injury.
Southampton: There are no new injuries for the club ahead of this game but Valentino Livramento will likely miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.
Brentford vs Southampton Head to Head:
The teams have not played at Brentford’s ground since 2011 when Southampton ran out 3-0 winners.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Southampton won 4-1.
From the last 12 meetings Brentford have won just two times.
3 from the last 4 meetings has only seen one club to score.
Brentford vs Southampton Prediction:
It would be a mistake if these clubs thought they were safe just yet and that is why they will be looking for a win here. Both teams will set up to attack and we could see a very open first half, the market on witnessing over 1.5 goals in the first half is always great value and we should take this on here.
However this could also be a game that peter’s out somewhat as it goes on and if the game is heading for a draw both teams may be happy to take a point here and move on from that. Brentford being at home will fancy their chances of a win and for all of their heroics this season the Bees haven’t always been their best at home so will probably believe that they have something to prove.
Southampton have blown hot and cold this season but has a good history of getting the right result over Brentford but their form coming into this game leads us to believe that the Bees may just get a rare win over the Saints.
