Brentford vs Southampton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 4th February 2023
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium

Match Preview:

This has been a superb season so far for Brentford who have 30 points already and any talk of relegation at the beginning of the season has been quashed. Thomas Frank is doing a wonderful job and in forward Ivan Toney who has scored 13 goals and assisted in a further 3 he has a player bang on form.

The Bees are in 8th place and a win could take them to the dizzy heights of 6th if Brighton and Fulham drop points and they will be the favourites to win this game against an opponent in Southampton who have been poor this season. Brentford’s last game ended 0-0 away to Leeds but they are unbeaten since the restart after the World Cup and at home they have lost just once. However with that type of record it is surprising to note that they have won just 50% of their games at home because they have also drawn 4 from 10. They have though won their last two games at home after beating Liverpool and Bournemouth.

Southampton are bottom of the table however they are not rock bottom and with 18 games left to play they have the time to get out of trouble. The Saints are presently only bottom because of an inferior goal difference over Everton and in theory if they win here and results go their way they would climb out of the bottom three. That’s a big ask but this would still be a huge win. Only 3 points separates 20th place from 14th so that should be encouraging to any side currently struggling.

A few weeks ago they were able to win just their 4th game of the campaign as they beat Everton away from home but the following week Nathan Jones side were back to losing again as they came up short against Aston Villa by 1-0 at home. Away from home the Saints have lost 70% of their games but incredibly it isn’t all bad news because they have won more points on the road than at home, indeed 9 of their total haul of 15 points have come this way. However in general they are struggling to score goals on the road with just 8 converted so far.

Team News:

Brentford: Shandon Baptiste could return from a lengthy lay off and will be assessed. Frank Onyeka is still a month away with his hamstring.

Southampton: Stuart Armstrong could return after recovering from a groin injury but will be assessed. Alex McCarthy has a lack of match fitness but could make selection. Kyle Walker-Peters will be assessed for a tight muscle strain. Juan Larios and Valentino Livramento remain out long term.

Brentford vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season Brentford ran away with a 3-0 victory.

The last 6 meetings have seen a pattern of win and lose, and if this were to continue then Southampton would win at the weekend.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Brentford vs Southampton Prediction:

Southampton need to step up and start earning those points but they are away to a very tough side who are in good form and good confidence and we don’t see them making an impact here. Indeed it would feel like a surprise result if the Saints came here and grabbed all three points.

Brentford at home is no easy ask for any side in the league and last season this game finished 3-0 and we believe we could see something similar. Southampton look set to struggle for the rest of the season and even though they currently have a better away record than at home, it will be at home where Jones side may have more of a chance of winning. Ivan Toney is on form as we have mentioned and he will be fancying his chances against a defence that has conceded 35 goals so far.

Brentford vs Southampton Betting Tips:

Brentford to beat Southampton at 1.80

Anytime goalscorer: Ivan Toney at 2.10

Correct Score: Brentford to win 2-0 or 3-0 at 8.00 and 15.00
