Brentford vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 26th February 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium

Match Preview:

Brentford are under a lot of pressure to stay up and we can look at them and Leeds as being sides who just seem to be on the threshold where it can go either way. One of the disadvantages the Bees have is they've played more games than teams around them.

Thomas Frank’s side are in poor form with just 1 point earned from their last 15 and being in 14th place can’t disguise the fact that they are just 4 points from the bottom three. The clubs last game finished in a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal though many didn’t expect them to win that game. At home the Bees have lost 7 of their 13 games so far with their last victory here coming seven weeks ago against Aston Villa.

Newcastle are rolling along, and life at the clubs feels like a million miles away from the end of last year. And yet the Magpies are still in danger of going down. They are undefeated in their last five games and as a result have been able to climb out of the bottom three but only to be in 17th place. They are 2 points clear of 18th placed Burnley but have played a game more. These are all fine margins and the owners will be hoping that the investment in the team throughout January will start to pay dividends. Of course it has in small pockets and the club are not losing games now but they need to put a 2-3 game winning run together to be able to relax.

The Magpies recent 3 game winning run came to an end in their last game which ended in a 1-1 draw with West Ham. Eddie Howe’s side have only won 1 game away from home but after their spending last month we maybe can’t look into how poor their overall record on the road is now as they have gone their last two games undefeated and certainly things are looking up for them.

Team News:

Brentford: This weekend could be an emotional return to football for Christian Eriksen following his cardiac arrest last summer in the European Championships for Denmark. He has had some fitness issues but has come through some training games and could well play a part in this game. Tariqe Fosu-Henry who has spent time on the sidelines could return for this one but will be assessed because of his fitness. Ivan Toney is being tipped to return after a lack of match fitness, and it is the same case for Zanka. Mathias Jensen has a knock and may miss out.

Newcastle: Kieran Trippier may be missing for the next two months with a foot injury. Ryan Fraser will be assessed for fatigue, Allan Saint-Maximin has a knock but is being tipped to return for this game. Javier Manquillo misses out with an ankle injury. Matt Ritchie is out long term with a knee injury and Callum Wilson is out until May with a long term calf injury.

Brentford vs Newcastle Head to Head:

This will be just the 14th time the teams have ever met and Newcastle have won 8 games.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 3-3.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Brentford vs Newcastle Prediction:

It’s undeniable how a victory for Brentford this weekend would be huge because even though they wouldn’t be able to climb a position due to goal difference they could well put some distance between themselves and the likes of Leeds and Everton who both have hard games to play. At home with the crowd behind them and with Christian Eriksen possibly returning to football, it will give the Bees a boost on what should be an incredibly emotional day not just for Brentford but for all of football.

At the same time this will be a highly competitive game and Newcastle’s mindset has changed, they need to get the points on the board and aren’t even halfway there to being safe yet. The club are looking good and playing well but they will be up against it at times too. These are two finely balanced teams though form dictates that Newcastle could win this game but also score a few goals too, it all depends if they can get off to a positive start but they have every chance of doing so, so we will back the away side but with the draw covered on the refund.
