England Premier League
Saturday 8th April 2023
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium
Match Preview:
Thomas Frank’s Brentford side have been solid for most of the season and still have a chance to finish in a European place which would underline a stunning season for the Bees however they have been knocked back in recent weeks and come into this weekend with no wins from their last 3. This run has included two draws against Leicester and Brighton and in their last game they were edged out 1-0 in midweek away to Manchester United.
Brentford are in 9th with 43 points and are only three shy of the last European place however with Liverpool, Aston Villa and Brighton also fighting for it, it does seem like quite a tough ask for the Bees. At home Frank’s side have only lost once which is a remarkable record although like their opponents they have drawn too many games this season and that includes six at home. Still they have gathered an impressive 27 points from 42 and will feel confident to get something in this game.
Newcastle have won their last 4 games in a row and there is a buzz about the club, and they look to be the happiest side in the league also. The Magpies are coming off a terrific result by destroying West Ham in midweek and winning 5-1 away from home. Eddie Howe’s side are in 3rd place with 53 points on goal difference to Manchester United but for now and with the threat of Tottenham involved a top four finish is far from assured but they are certainly on the right track. Howe’s side have won almost 50% of games away from home, which is impressive but have almost drawn 50% of games away from home too- still they have the 3rd best away record in the league and have only conceded 11 goals on the road which is the 3rd best defensive record. It’s also just one loss from their last five away games and they have won their last 2 away games.
Team News:
Brentford: Kristoffer Ajer is out with his calf. Vitaly Janelt could return after recovering from injury but will have to be assessed due to a lack of match fitness. Frank Onyeka remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Newcastle: Miguel Almiron is out until the end of the month at least with a thigh injury. Emil Krafth is out long term with his knee and may not return this season.
Brentford vs Newcastle Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 2-0 to Newcastle.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Newcastle won 5-1.
For the last 5 meetings in a row we have seen a pattern of over and under 2.5 goals and if this continues this game would be under 2.5 goals.
Brentford vs Newcastle Prediction:
Considering their form Newcastle are an excellent price to win this game as they try to make it five wins in a row. Every game is like a cup final to the Magpies now and they seem to have such a confident swagger to their game it is hard not to think that they won’t win here too. Of course football is rarely that simple and Brentford has the chance to upset Howe’s side and football can be fine margins. Despite Newcastle’s 5-1 thumping win over West Ham in midweek Howe was quick to admit how tough the game was and how the scoreline glossed over what actually happened on the pitch.
However there seems to have been a shift in Newcastle and perhaps that was beating Manchester United last week, a side they usually lose against. There are goals in this side and of course there are goals in Brentford too and we may well end up witnessing one of the most entertaining fixtures of the weekend, expect the goals to flow.
Brentford vs Newcastle Betting Tips:
Newcastle to beat Brentford at 2.10
Anytime goalscorer: Callum Wilson at 2.50
Over 2.5 goals at 1.92
