England Premier League
Wednesday 19th January 2022
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium
Match Preview:
Brentford come into this game in poor form with four defeats from their last five. They are 10 points clear of the bottom three and they should be safe this season but the recent form will be worrying for the club.
The Bees have had some tough matches which includes having to face Manchester City and Liverpool and indeed playing Jurgen Klopp’s side was their last game in which they lost 3-0 away from home. Victory in this midweek game could push the club up 3-4 places so there should be a lot of motivation ahead of this clash.
The bad news is Brentford come into this game not only having lost their last two in a row but also conceded 7 goals. However those matches were both away from home and their last home match ended in a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa. Actually 13 of Brentford’s 23 points have come at home and form for the club is very different if we concentrate just on their home form with 3 wins from their last four. However their statistics even at home are quite erratic and they have still lost 50% of their games in front of their home fans.
You sense that the only team under pressure in this fixture is Manchester United who continue to be criticised since Ralf Rangnick took over. The club look disjointed and while you can argue that Rangnick needs time you can flip that over and understand that a new manager coming in usually has an immediate impact. Perhaps the players have no heart knowing that Rangnick will only be at the club until the end of the season but then again what is Rangnick’s personal goals? Does he want to impress so much that United end up giving him the job permanently? Because if so he really is going by May if he keeps this up.
Last week United were cruising away to Aston Villa and were 2-0 up but Villa managed to come back and the game finished 2-2. This underlined the problems at this United side. It’s just 1 win in their last four games also and the club are in 7th position but not all hope is lost and they are still setting their sights on finishing in 4th place. As it stands the club are 5 points adrift of their objective but have 2 games in hand over 4th placed West Ham. The bad news is that Arsenal and Tottenham are in between them and it feels as if United do not have the push in them to get 4th.
Away form is decent for most clubs but you would expect more from this United side and they have won 40% of their games on the road. The club have gone their last four games unbeaten and haven’t lost away from home since the Watford game back in November which of course spelled the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time at the club.
Team News:
Brentford: Frank Onyeka is on international duty. Zanka is back in training but has some fitness issues but nothing suggests he won’t be assessed for this game, but remains doubtful. David Raya Martin. Josh Da Silva, Charlie Goodie and Tariqe Fosu-Henry are all out long term.
Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo has been forced to miss the last two games and will be assessed again after his slight hip injury, but is being tipped to play here. Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be assessed after illness, Marcus Rashford is a doubt with a dead leg. Eric Bailly is on international duty and Paul Pogba is still out with a thigh injury.
Brentford vs Man Utd Head to Head:
This game will be the first time the clubs have played each other since 1975 when Manchester United at home won 2-1.
The teams have not played each other at Brentford’s ground in 75 years.
The clubs have only played each other 13 times with 6 wins for Manchester United, 5 for Brentford and 2 draws.
Brentford vs Man Utd Prediction:
Manchester United are the odds on favourites but surely it is in name only. But even though they are the favourites to win their price is around the 1.80 mark which shows you the respect Brentford merit. Better teams have come to Brentford and lost or drawn matches, remember the 3-3 game vs Liverpool, or when the Bees beat Arsenal? Manchester City only won 1-0 here a few weeks ago so there will be a lot for United to ponder on.
Of course on paper and if Ronaldo plays they possess the quality to win here and score 4 or 5 goals but not many people would admit to that happening, not with this current United side. If Brentford can control the pace of the game there is nothing to suggest that on this midweek evening they can really make it a miserable night for United. There are simply too many players at the club who are not performing and throwing themselves into performances. You get the sense that luck will play its part if United are to get all 3 points which is never a good sign and the value seems to be with the home side even if it feels like a risk to go against United.
