England Premier League
Tuesday 14th December 2021
Kick off at 7:30pm GMT
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium
Match Preview:
The midweek matches kick off with Manchester United’s visit of Brentford and even though there is a gulf between the clubs this is the type of game that the home side will relish. Not only will Manchester United be the opposition but the home fans will be delighted to see one of the greatest players of all time in Cristiano Ronaldo at their ground. It is sure to be quite an atmosphere.
Brentford will be the outsiders of course but at home against the big teams the club have proved themselves on a few occasions already. Arsenal have been beaten here and even Liverpool had to settle for a 3-3 draw. However the Bees do not have a great home record overall, although will be encouraged by the fact that they have won their last 2 games here. Those victories came against Everton and Watford.
It’s been 2 games managed and two games won for Manchester United’s new manager Ralf Rangnick. That’s the good news, but perhaps the more muted news is that both wins have finished 1-0 and the opposition in both games have not made it easy for the Red Devils. United have beaten Crystal Palace and last weekend beat Norwich but in both games perhaps a bigger score line was expected. Indeed United had to settle for an Ronaldo penalty to settle the game against one of the poorest sides in the league in Norwich.
Still a win is a win and United have won their last 3 games now and come into this game in 5th place. United haven’t lost a game for almost four weeks, that one being against Watford which ended up costing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job. On the road United have the 4th best record in the league and have won 50% of their games
Team News:
Brentford: Kristoffer Ajer, Tarique Fosu-Henry, Josh Da Silva and David Raya Martin are all out long term. Ivan Toney has an outside chance to return for this game after missing the last match as he had Covid-19. Zanka is still out with a muscle injury.
Manchester United: Victor Lindelof could return from a chest injury. Edinson Cavani is on his way to recovery but is expected to miss this match but could be back for the weekend. Antony Martial is only 50/50 after his slight knee injury. Juan Mata will be assessed after his recent illness but remains a doubt it is the same case for Nemanja Matic. It is expected that Raphael Varane will not return until the weekend and Paul Pogba is still out with a thigh injury.
Brentford vs Man Utd Head to Head:
The teams have not played each other for 46 years the last time they did so Manchester United won 2-1 in the League Cup, and were at home.
The last game when Brentford was the home team ended 0-0 but this game took place in 1947.
The teams have only played each other 13 times and Manchester United has the most wins with six to Brentford’s five.
Brentford vs Man Utd Prediction:
Even though Brentford should be up against it one could imagine that they will be no pushover in this game. This shouldn’t be the situation and with all due respect to Brentford, the stature of United, what they should bring to this game and the quality of players they have should have us believing that this will be a straight forward victory for United. But perhaps the time has come to not have the fullest confidence in this United side.
Rangnick can’t really be blamed he will need time of course but has much changed in the two games he has been in charge? United look better organised under the German but still look an unbalanced side and we shouldn’t forget that Palace and Norwich had plenty of good chances against them.
We still have to give the edge to Utd, but this could be a narrow victory for the away side, in a match which doesn't contain too many goals.
