England Premier League
Wednesday 29th December 2021
Kick off at 8:15pm GMT
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium
Match Preview:
Had this fixture been a cup game from a few seasons ago we could have looked at this and thought of it as a miss match but Brentford in their first full season in the top flight since the 1940s have proven themselves and being at home the Bees will be up for this game.
Of course the home side will be the big outsiders to get anything from this game. They come into this fixture in 13th place with 20 points and with surviving this season being the clubs objective they are well on their way to doing so.
Brentford lost 2-0 away to Brighton at the weekend though that was the clubs first game in two weeks as their season much like a lot of clubs has been disrupted by the new Covid outbreak with games having to be postponed. Before that it was just one defeat in their last four. It’s difficult to say that the club will be looking to bounce back from defeat when they have to face a club like Manchester City but they will certainly try their best with their home fans behind them to try and create quite an atmosphere. It is an atmosphere and a raising of their level that forced Liverpool into a 3-3 draw here, so who knows what could happen?
Manchester City have been absolutely fantastic lately and have scored a mind boggling 17 goals in their last 3 games. To put that in context that is more than double what Norwich have achieved in 18 games. On Boxing Day and in their latest game City beat Leicester 6-3 at home in a quite enthralling game that witnessed City run into a 4-0 lead by half time. Leicester came back to 4-3 but City know how to see out games and scored another two goals to kill the tie off.
The champions are in 1st place and coming into midweek have a six point advantage over Liverpool although that could be cut to just three with the same games played as Liverpool play the day before. But with a total haul of 47 points at the half way point of the season City will be happy and look impressive to try and capture back to back titles. It is just total dominance at this point of the season from Pep Guardiola’s side who have won their last 9 games, including winning their last five away from home. Add to that City have won 22 points on the road from a possible 27 and their last trip ended in a 4-0 win over Newcastle.
Team News:
Brentford: Charlie Goode is out with a hamstring injury that occurred in the clubs EFL game with Chelsea just before the Christmas period. Rico Henry has recovered from his hamstring and should be ready for this game. Vitaly Janelt has Covid-19 and won’t play. Christian Norgaard is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. Zanka is out with a muscle injury. Bryan Mbeumo should be fine after a slight muscle problem and is being tipped to play. Kristoffer Ajer could return this weekend but looks likely to miss out again as he is recovering from a hamstring injury. Tariqe Fosu-Henry, Josh Da Silva and David Raya Martin are all out long term.
Manchester City: Kyle Walker and Rodri could both return after a lack of match fitness and will be assessed. John Stones has a minor knock and will also be assessed. Ferran Torres is due back next week from a long lay off with a foot injury but he may be transferred to Barcelona in the January transfer window.
Brentford vs Man City Head to Head:
This will only be the 14th meeting between the clubs.
The last time the clubs played here was 24 years ago in the FA Cup which Manchester City won 1-0.
There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.
Brentford vs Man City Prediction:
Brentford have proven already how strong they can be when their backs are up against the wall even before a whistle has been blown and we have no doubt that the home side will have their fair share of the action in the early exchanges.
Just because Manchester City have been winning games and scoring so frequently this doesn’t mean they can come here and walk away with a 5-0 result, which on paper at least looks like they will. The worry we have for the home side is that as the game goes on they could be feeling the effects of constantly having to focus without possession, the club also have a mounting injury list and in the end this is going to count against them when playing the quality of this Manchester City side.
As expected City are odds on with no real value but with the form they are in it might be worth backing the win/win for City which increases the price significantly. The bottom line is we expect City to ease to victory and get the job done and we can’t see Brentford making much of an impact despite being at home, City are on a roll.
