England Premier League
Sunday 28th May 2023
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium
Match Preview:
Brentford have an outside chance to qualify for Europe but with Aston Villa and Tottenham just ahead of them and also vying for that place their chances don’t look great even if they were to upset the champions at the weekend.
Of course the big news surrounding the club has been the suspension until next January of forward Ivan Toney who has been charged with betting on football games sometimes involving his own team. This is a huge blow for the Bees to be missing his services for such a lengthy period. At the same time there is no doubt they will be looking for another forward in the summer to fill the gap. But there has been negativity following the club from this fall out.
Manchester City are in good spirits of course after winning their 3rd league title in a row and certainly they can come into this game with absolutely no pressure on them at all. It will be interesting to see if manager Pep Guardiola finally decides to rest some of his players given that this is a dead rubber game for both clubs. Guardiola historically doesn’t rest some key players but the club has an FA Cup and Champions League final coming up. City’s spellbinding win consistency came to an end in midweek as they drew 1-1 away to Brighton but the club can wind down now in the league and it was a result that mattered more for Brighton. If City were to win here they would end up having the best away form in the league for this season and they have won 11 games and lost 4 on the road so far. They also need 2 goals to have the most scored away from home too.
Team News:
Brentford: Ivan Toney is suspended for 8 months, Matthew Cox is on international duty. Christian Norgaard, Pontus Jansson and Keane Lewis-Potter are all out for the season.
Manchester City: Nathan Ake is only 50/50 for this game due to his hamstring and has to be considered as a doubt. It’s ‘knocking’ time at the club with Jack Grealish, Manuel Akanji, Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias all having knocks and will have to be assessed.
Brentford vs Man City Head to Head:
Last season Manchester City won this fixture 1-0.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Brentford won 2-1.
Manchester City have won 4 of the last 5 meetings.
Brentford vs Man City Prediction:
Of course Brentford created one of the shocks of the season as they beat Manchester City at the Etihad and deservedly so, but that was a different kind of City back at that time. However perhaps one cannot rule out another surprise given that City have to have their focus on other competitions now and it would be worth checking the final team news ahead of the game.
Erling Haaland has been quiet for his standards and looks like he may have to settle for ‘just’ the 36 goals this time out. A quest to reach 40 looks well beyond him now for this season. This is a risky game because like with the Brighton game City were odds on favourites but there isn’t anything to play for. Of course City will mind dropping points and don’t envisage losing but they are not worth our trust all things considered and with such important finals for them coming up. So it is better to look into different markets. What has been interesting is that the score lines of recent games have all bee close and we expect to see that once again on Sunday.
