Brentford vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 19th October 2022
Kick off at 7:30pm BST
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium

Match Preview:

Brentford ended 3 games without a win this past weekend by overcoming Brighton 2-0 and they will stay at home for the second game in a row for the visit and sterner test of Chelsea.

The Bees are in 9th place with 13 points and are already looking safe for this season if they keep up the form. Seven points have been won from their last five games and for a club like Brentford this is good going. The one worry they have is that when they have faced quality teams this season they have really struggled, take the 3-0 loss at home to Arsenal. The clubs 4-0 win over Manchester United was of course magnificent, but August seems a long way away now. At home Thomas Frank’s side have the 5th best record in the Premier League with 10 points won from a possible 15 losing just that one game against the Gunners. They are also scoring on average 2 goals per game in front of their own fans, so there are a lot of positives to take hold of.

Chelsea have looked flawless under Graham Potter in the league and continue to march on. It’s 4 wins in a row for the Blues now after they eased to a 2-0 win away to Aston Villa this past weekend. They come into this midweek batch of games in 4th place with 19 points and have a game in hand over the top 3 but are 4 points behind 3rd placed Tottenham so need to keep up their consistency. Currently Chelsea have the 2nd best away record in the league with 9 points won from a possible 12 although they have lost games against Southampton and Leeds, albeit under former manager Thomas Tuchel.

Team News:

Brentford: Christian Norgaard won’t return until the end of the month due to his hamstring. Aaron Hickey is set to miss out with an ankle injury. Thomas Strakosha is out with an ankle injury with no fixed return date.

Chelsea: Thiago Silva is a doubt with a thigh injury and will be assessed, Reece James and Wesley Fofana are both out with knee injuries and N’Golo Kante is out with his hamstring.

Brentford vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season Chelsea won this fixture 1-0.

Chelsea have won four of the last 5 meetings although the last time they met Brentford won 4-1 away from home.

There is a 70% chance to see over 3.5 goals.

Brentford vs Chelsea Prediction:

Normally these clubs wouldn’t have played each other much as Brentford have been stuck in the lower leagues for so long. However because of cup matches they have actually met six times in the last decade and the two patterns have been Chelsea wins- no surprise there but also a lot of goals. Brentford have had a solid start to the season but this is a huge test for them and we don’t think they will pass it.

Perhaps there was some risk for Graham Potter to take this job though no one could have blamed him for trying, but right now Chelsea are winning games exactly the same way they did when Frank Lampard was sacked for Thomas Tuchel. This is clearly the honeymoon period for the Blues who can do no wrong under Potter and we don’t see it ending in this game, although it won’t be easy and we expect the Bees to put up a better fight than Aston Villa recently did, but this is an away win for us.
