Brazil vs Mexico: Preview and Prediction

World Cup 2018 - Last 16
Monday 2nd July 2018
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Cosmos Arena

Match Preview:

All eyes will be on this Latin clash when 5 times World Cup winners Brazil take on Mexico for a chance to compete in the quarter finals.

A World Cup always feels that little bit extra special when Brazil are playing and this being a knock out game, the excitement and anticipation will be reaching fever pitch. There is a sense though that Brazil are still trying to erase their 7-1 historic defeat against Germany in the last World Cup, and that despite topping their group they have not shown their true potential. Instead the side have put in professional displays scoring 5 goals in total and conceding just once. The man who is trying to make it all happen, Neymar, has been getting better game by game and he will have to be at his best to stop Mexico.

Mexico have been hit and miss, hit in that they beat champions Germany 1-0 but they looked very out of sorts when they lost 3-0 to Sweden. Had Germany beat South Korea, Mexico would be on the plane back to Central America. Still we must look at the positives of the side and that is they are here to attack and play free flowing football. This should make for a very entertaining game of football but could also play into Brazil’s hands. Mexico have never made it to a quarter finals before.

Brazil vs Mexico Team News:

Brazil: Marcelo suffered back spasms against Serbia and is rated doubtful for this showdown, and Douglas Costa is out injured.

Mexico: No major injuries to report ahead of this game but Hector Moreno is suspended for picking up two yellow cards in the group phase.

Brazil vs Mexico Head to Head:

The last time the nations met 3 years ago Brazil won 2-0.

The nations met in the last World Cup and the match finished 0-0 in 90 minutes.

In the previous 4 World Cup matches Brazil has never lost to Mexico.

Brazil vs Mexico Prediction:

Brazil have not set this World Cup on fire yet but the potential is there and they are playing some impressive football. Mexico are exciting to watch but clearly tire as the game goes on and if Brazil can get an early goal it may kill any momentum Mexico has. Mexico have a chance here and shouldn’t be completely written off but Brazil are simply a better team and seem to have a big psychological hold on their opponents too. Brazil to advance to the last eight.
