England Premier League
Saturday 12th August 2023
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Vitality Stadium
Match Preview:
Despite surviving in the Premier League Bournemouth sacked Gary O’Neil after his efforts and brought in Andoni Iraola from La Liga side Rayo Vallencano so it is all change at the Cherries and there will be a close eye on the Spaniard to see if he is able to make the club advance.
Bournemouth have been buying and have spent £60m so far on four new players. In comes the son of Patrick Kluivert, Justin Kluivert for £9m from Roma. Hamed Traore is the biggest fee spending £20m and he comes from Sassuolo. Romain Favre has been snapped up for £13m from Lyon and Milos Kerkez cost just over £15m from Dutch club AZ. There has been a focus certainly on improving defence so this should be an interesting season for the Cherries as they try to improve on last season.
There has been infighting at West Ham where they should be calm. It has been between manager David Moyes and the new technical director Tim Steidten. The two have clashed on potential signings which has seen a few escape the Hammers radar. Steidten is more interested in continental flair and it has been suggested that Moyes wants more British players in the side. This has led to some reports that despite delivering the Hammers with their first trophy in 43 years that Moyes might be sacked this month unless the ship is steadied and he will need to get off to a positive start.
Disappointingly the only signing so far is Sean Moore who comes from Cliftonville and this has enraged fans who want to know when Declan Rice will be replaced, the club received over £100m for the midfielder and yet so far those funds have not been injected back into the club. The Hammers have had a mixed pre-season with a good tour of Australia as they beat Tottenham but they have lost their last two games. Those defeats came against Rennes and Bayer Leverkusen where they shipped seven goals and scored just once.
Team News:
Bournemouth: Ryan Fredericks is still recovering from a long term injury from last season with his calf and looks set to miss out again. Ryan Christie will be assessed for a muscle injury. Lloyd Kelly is a doubt after picking up a knock. Antoine Semenyo looks out due to a shin injury. Marcus Tavernier is struggling with a knock
West Ham: Thomas Soucek has some fatigue and will be assessed. Otherwise it is a clean bill of health for the Hammers coming into this game.
Bournemouth vs West Ham Head to Head:
Last season West Ham won this fixture 4-0 and have won the last 3 meetings in a row.
West Ham have scored 10 goals past Bournemouth in their last 3 meetings.
Bournemouth’s last win over the Hammers came back in 2019 when they won 2-0 at home.
There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.
Bournemouth vs West Ham Prediction:
Bournemouth are the type of side that can be a real banana skin for West Ham and if the Hammers are not on the ball one feels that they can struggle here. The good news of course is that David Moyes' side have a very good recent record over the Cherries. However as the opening games loom ever nearer there seems to be discontent within the West Ham camp and there are emerging stories that they may lose Lucas Paqueta to Manchester City which would be a huge blow.
So far Bournemouth have spent more money than the Hammers in the summer window and given that they are at home and with a new manager this looks like being a very tricky start for the Londoners. They must pull on their reserves and think about how they were able to score four goals here last season, but football changes quickly and this could be game Bournemouth get something from.
