It's finally happened, England captain Harry Kane has left the Premier League to play abroad and has joined up with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. There have been so many great English forwards in the past who declined moving out of their comfort zones and so it still seems a surprise that Kane has made the leap. In the past natural goalscorers like Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney could have easily joined some of the biggest sides in Europe and while Rooney eventually did go to the MLS, by that time he was close to retirement, Kane moves still in his prime.
Of course talking about Shearer is always going to bring up the Premier League all time goalscoring record. It is held by Shearer at 260 goals and Kane has 213. He was well on course to break the record needing just 48 goals to do so, considering he scored 30 last season this felt like an inevitability. However his Bayern adventure has arrived and Kane has traded records for possible trophies. This is what the move to Germany is all about, he needs trophies and Bayern normally win them. However he will also grow as a player and a person and despite some jealous and hateful memes across the internet Kane has made a clever move and is looking to improve himself all round. While the haters will tell toilet humour jokes Kane has taken up two German language speaking lessons a week, he will earn incredible money and should be able to win a plethora of trophies, something denied to him at Tottenham. But here's the thing, Kane will probably be able to have his Bayern adventure win the trophies he craves and still come back to the Premier League and beat Shearer's record. Twenty years ago this wouldn't have been possible but sports science has moved on where players are able to play now easily into their late 30s. Kane has a four year contract at Bayern and could return to England when he is 34 that would give him 2-3 very good seasons to score 48 goals, simply put it isn't impossible, Kane really could have his cake and eat it.
There was a shocker involving VAR on the opening weekend of the season as Manchester United got off to a nervy 1-0 home win against Wolves. However in the final stages Wolves were denied a stonewall penalty as new United goalkeeper Andre Onana fouled not one but two Wolves players as he came to retrieve the ball but clearly missed it. The technology in VAR should be welcomed, that it is still controlled by humans is the real problem. There have been some excellent decisions but there have also been some shocking ones. Had the same incident happened in the Wolves area would a penalty really have not been called? These decisions are ripping the heart and soul out of the game. Thankfully the VAR team has been suspended for this weekend's fixtures however that doesn't feel like enough of a punishment and sadly we are going to see many more errors of this kind this season.
Chelsea keep on spending and it has been reported they have splashed over £800m in just 3 transfer windows. Owner Todd Boehly seems to have unlimited money as he tries to get Chelsea back to their best. This week they broke the British transfer record by signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton for a whopping £115m denying his a possible move to Liverpool. However when the club threw money at a problem last season it seemed to come back and bite them, the more they spent the more they failed. Caicedo is a very good player but you get the sense that the Blues have well overspent for him. As for Brighton they have lost yet another quality player and you have to wonder how many more they can lose before the wheels start to come off which is a shame in itself as they looked to be emerging as quite a force, Roberto De Zerbi has quite a challenge on his hands.
