England Premier League
Wednesday 4th January 2023
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
Aston Villa are feeling the Umai Emery effect and the club has certainly improved in his short time here. That was underlined in Villa’s last game as they went to Tottenham and won 2-0 in a surprise result. That was the perfect tonic as over Christmas they lost 3-1 at home to Liverpool and Villa have won 3 of their last four games now and moved up to 12th place.
Villa are seven points clear of the bottom three and will want to push on through the top 10 and they are certainly heading in the right direction. At home Villa have won 50% of their games so far, though have lost 2 of their last four games here but we can only really reflect on Emery’s presence so far and Villa for now look like a changed side.
Wolves recently won only their 3rd game of the season as they went to Everton and won 2-1 however that was followed up by a 1-0 loss at home to Manchester United. That game looked like it was heading for a 0-0 draw but ended up being a blow for Wolves as they try to avoid relegation. Wolves have won just 4 points from their last five games. Away form has been poor with just one win so far and five defeats but is there some light at the end of the tunnel? Wolves have managed to go their last 2 away games undefeated but with just 5 goals scored on their travels that simply isn’t good enough. Despite their poor form a win here could well take the club out of the bottom three.
Team News:
Aston Villa: Douglas Luiz will be assessed for a minor ankle injury, Jacob Ramsey has a hamstring as does John McGinn and both players remain in doubt and Diego Carlos is out long term with his Achilles.
Wolves: There are no new injuries for the club but Pedro Neto, Chiquinho and Sasa Kalajdzic are all out long term.
Aston Villa vs Wolves Head to Head:
Last season Wolves won this fixture 3-2.
It’s been 4 years since Aston Villa have managed a home win in the league against Wolves.
3 of the last 5 meetings have seen under 1.5 goals.
Aston Villa vs Wolves Prediction:
The two Spanish managers that have done sterling jobs elsewhere in Europe will do battle here and that will be the main story coming into this game. Unai Emery and Julen Lopetegui are two very good managers and the Premier League is all the better for it and this will be an intriguing game. We will back Villa for the win being at home and even though they lost this fixture last season so much has changed since then.
Villa’s form has improved and the players have a new self belief and at least for the next month we don’t see Villa dropping too many points at home to teams out of the top six, they are a very good price to win this game. That doesn’t mean that Wolves will lie down and they are a side that can really grind out games and dig deep when they need too, but this Villa side does possess quality and now it is time for those players to improve themselves under the new manager.
