England Premier League
Sunday 28th August 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
Aston Villa have lost two games from three but they were both away from home against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace and Steven Gerrard’s side will be looking forward to return to Villa Park.
Villa were defeated 3-1 by Crystal Palace last weekend and whilst travelling to Palace is a hard fixture now, Gerrard would have been upset. Not only did his side create good chances they were also leading the game after just 5 minutes. But as it went on it quickly became apparent that Villa were certainly not the better side. Here we have a club that work extremely hard, but they are more a physical team than one that can turn on the style and it must be a worry to see that they have already conceded six goals. Away from the league Villa did beat Bolton 4-1 away from home in the Carabao Cup in midweek, so that was a timely win ahead of this clash.
West Ham are the only team in English football’s professional divisions who have not scored a goal yet. There isn’t the need to go into crisis mode yet but at the same time it is a poor return given that they have been heading into the right direction for a good two years now, with additional signings there is a air of disappointment at the Hammers.
David Moyes side have lost to Manchester City which was expected but followed that up with defeat at Nottingham Forest and a home loss to Brighton. The good news for the club is that they have advanced to play in the Europa Conference League. They beat Viborg 6-1 on aggregate winning 3-0 in the 2nd leg in midweek.
Team News:
Aston Villa: The club are doing well with injuries but of course Diego Carlos is the big blow with his Achilles injury and he has no fixed date to return.
West Ham: Vladimir Coufal will be assessed due to concussion but remains a doubt. Craig Dawson is only 50/50 to return due to a thigh injury. Nayef Aguerd is out with his ankle injury and could be for the next 6-8 weeks.
Aston Villa vs West Ham Head to Head:
It was happy memories here for West Ham last season as they beat Aston Villa 4-1.
West Ham have won the last 4 meetings in a row.
It’s been seven years since Aston Villa recorded a win over the Hammers.
The last 4 meetings have all seen over 2.5 goals.
Aston Villa vs West Ham Prediction:
Maybe playing Aston Villa is the game where West Ham can kick start their season. They score goals against Villa and more importantly they win games and in general have a good record against them even away from home. First things first we believe that the Hammers will at least break their duck and score their first Premier League goal of the season. What has been frustrating for fans is that new forward Gianluca Scamacca isn't being favoured over the misfiring Michail Antonio and yet for the European games Moyes has been more trusting of his new signing. Surely this will be the game where Scamacca starts?
We expect a physical battle but also goals and this fixture certainly has a pattern for that. Villa will not be easy to beat and it might feel like a cliche but the winner of this game will be the one that battles the hardest, this could come down to midfield. Villa need to bounce back and so do West Ham, but it was the Hammers that had to take a trip to Denmark on Thursday will that slightly count against them here?
