England Premier League
Sunday 22nd October 2023
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
There is just one game on Sunday as two teams come together who have been punching above their weight and two teams that are certainly going forward. Aston Villa are in fifth place with 16 points and are unbeaten in their last four with wins over Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Brighton. The Brighton game was their last home game and it ended in a fantastic 6-1 victory for Unai Emery’s side. In their last game before the international break they drew 1-1 away to Wolves but the intent is real and Villa are going to be looking for a Champions League place this season. At home Villa have the 3rd best record and have won all of their home games so far, they have scored an impressive 13 goals at home which is the joint best with Brighton and have conceded just twice.
West Ham have started the season well and are just 2 points behind their hosts. It was important that David Moyes' side got over their back to back defeats against Manchester City and Liverpool, games one could say they were expected to lose. Still it is all about the recovery and the Hammers followed up the disappointment by then beating Sheffield United and drawing to a very strong Newcastle side 2-2 at home. With 34 goals scored already between the teams there are plenty of goals in them and one would expect that trend to continue at the weekend. Away from home the Hammers have lost just once and have won two times beating Luton and more impressively putting Brighton to the sword in a 3-1 victory.
Team News:
Aston Villa: Jacob Ramsey is a doubt and just 50/50 to return after his foot injury. There is good news for Tim Irogbunham who is back from injury but has some fitness issues but he could be assessed. Tyrone Mings remains out with a knee injury and Alex Moreno could be assessed after his hamstring but the feeling is this game may just come too soon for him. Emiliano Buendia is out until early next year due to a knee injury.
West Ham: Ben Johnson is expected back after his recent groin injury and Aaron Cresswell remains sidelined due to an ongoing hamstring injury, these are the only concerns for the club.
Aston Villa vs West Ham Head to Head:
Last season West Ham won this fixture 1-0.
Aston Villa haven’t beaten West Ham for 8 years, home or away.
There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Aston Villa vs West Ham Prediction:
We all have our bogey sides no matter who you support and Aston Villa’s have been West Ham in the past decade, they just can’t seem to get the better of them. Could this game be any different though? Villa have to be respected at home and Emery knows the importance of keeping your home games like a fortress no matter who comes here you need to win the games. West Ham have looked very solid and tricky to play against and all credit to the club after losing their major key player Declan Rice to Arsenal during the summer.
We expect a close game and hard fought one but will be siding with Emery’s team to get the job done. It was a close two games the clubs played last season with Villa narrowly losing out at home but later on in the season they went to West Ham and drew 1-1. Both clubs are on a mission and come into this game on an equal footing but Villa have looked impressive at home and that could well end up being the difference.
