Aston Villa vs West Ham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 3rd February 2021
Kick off at 8:15pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

Aston Villa beat Southampton 1-0 at the weekend thanks to a Ross Barkley goal and the former Chelsea and Everton man has been rejuvenated with Villa this season. It was a game though that had controversy and Southampton believe that a few VAR calls really went against them. That game was also interesting in that it pitted two teams who have surprised this season and this fixture will continue that theme with West Ham punching above their weight in this campaign.

In truth at the beginning of the season Villa and West Ham could have been tipped to be relegated but they have proven many people wrong. Aston Villa come into this game in 9th place with 32 points but can still make a charge for Europe given that they have 2 games in hand over most of the teams above them. Form has been average to poor, yes they have recorded two wins in their last 3 games but have still lost 3 times from their last five outings.

Dean Smith’s side have actually only played 8 times at home and have won 50% of their games, the last home match for them ended in a 2-0 victory over Newcastle and the club have won their last two home games.

West Ham lost 3-1 to Liverpool at the weekend which felt inevitable and though the Hammers did not play well they were simply outclassed in the end. But David Moyes side shouldn’t feel sorry for themselves because they have played some great football and been on brilliant form and are 5th in the league and have 35 points. The Hammers have won 50% of their games away from home including winning their last 2 on the road and are unbeaten in their last 3 outings.

Team News:

Aston Villa: The club have no new injuries coming into this game.

West Ham: The Hammers have no new injuries coming into this fixture.

Aston Villa vs West Ham Head to Head:

Earlier in the season West Ham beat Aston Villa 2-1.

Last season this fixture ended 0-0.

8 from the last 9 league meetings have ended in under 2.5 goals.

In the league West Ham last won at Aston Villa in 2014 that is the Hammers only win at Villa Park in 10 attempts.

Aston Villa vs West Ham Prediction:

Both sides come into this game in form, because Villa are putting wins together at home and West Ham have done so well on the road.

One has to wonder how much the Liverpool game took out of a very confident West Ham team, it felt like a timely reminder of how Liverpool are on a different level to the Hammers. If the players do not let that result get them down then they can come here and really cause Villa some problems.

We expect an end to end game and lots of chances for both clubs but will opt for the home win. Villa are pretty solid at home and they know with their games in hand they can make a real splash in the league standings yet. Also West Ham have a poor record at this stadium.
