England Premier League
Sunday 25th April 2021
Kick off at 7pm BST
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
The West-Midlands derby should be another heated affair as in effect Aston Villa have the chance to send West Bromwich Albion to the Championship. True relegation won’t be settled this weekend but West Brom’s chances are running very thin to stay in the top flight now.
Aston Villa with 44 points have done well this season considering they were almost relegated last season but they will feel disappointed with themselves as they have had chances to aim higher and maybe finish in a European place. That looks like a distant dream now, although they have one and sometimes two games in hand over their rivals above them. But Villa’s problems lie in the fact that form simply hasn’t been good enough and they have lost 3 of their last four games coming into this duel.
Villa have lost their last two games although it was against Liverpool and Manchester City, and they should welcome returning home to face the team in 19th place, but a derby is a derby and is never easy or straightforward.
West Bromwich Albion lost 3-0 in midweek away to Leicester and that game was dead by half time. This was a terrible result for Sam Allardyce’s team who had won their last 2 games, which was no small feat for a club who have won just 5 games this season. Despite glimpses of what could have been the Baggies look like they will be relegated and are 9 points from safety. They have earned 7 points from their last 15 and away from home the Baggies have the 2nd poorest record in the league and have lost 10 games.
Team News:
Aston Villa: Jack Grealish is still injured with his shin and will miss this game. Morgan Sanson is out with a knee injury. Trezeguet is out long term with the same problem. Wesley has some fitness issues but could be back for this match.
West Bromwich Albion: Branislav Ivanovic is a long term injury with his hamstring. Robert Snodgrass is 50/50 to return following his knee injury.
Aston Villa vs West Brom Head to Head:
The last time the clubs played in the league here was in 2019 and West Bromwich Albion won 2-0.
Earlier in the season Aston Villa won 3-0 in the reverse fixture.
There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
There has only been one game that finished 0-0 from the last 14 meetings in all competitions.
Aston Villa vs West Brom Prediction:
West Bromwich Albion need to find that dazzling style of play which they possessed against Chelsea and Southampton, it still feels incredible that the club managed 8 goals in those two games. This match just feels like a home victory but the Baggies are going to try and have to pull out all of the stops, this is a cup final for them for sure.
It is important also to know the Burnley result, if Sean Dyche’s team have won or lost there will obviously be a different mindset from the away sides perspective. But Villa are trying to finish in a Europa League position and will push on hard for this game. Recent poor form shouldn’t be taken into account for Dean Smith’s side given how difficult their opponents have been and this could be the perfect match for them to get back on the winning trail.
