England Premier League
Saturday 19th February 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
The honeymoon period is over for Steven Gerrard and even though there have been plenty of positives for Aston Villa since he took over from Dean Smith there is also a feeling that in recent weeks the club has stalled.
It’s just one victory in the clubs past 5 games and they come into this game in 12th place. Would it be much of a surprise if Gerrard’s side were to finish in this position? One has to start wondering if the club will be focusing and looking ahead to next season now as they are already out of the FA Cup too. A European place is beyond them and they are 10 points from that objective and do not look like closing that gap. Still at the weekend they will fancy to get all three points against their opponent and they will of course be at home.
Villa lost to Newcastle by 1-0 in their last game and their last home game finished in a 3-3 draw against Leeds. This would have felt like a loss given that Villa were leading that game at one point 3-1. With victory and if other results go their way the club could move up to 10th place so there is plenty to play for in this game and the club need to get back to winning ways.
Watford look doomed and the problem with appointing Roy Hodgson is that if his teams concede first then the game seems to peter out for them. The Hornets are in 19th place and are 6 points from safety. Under Hodgson they have won just 1 point from 9 and come into this game having lost two in a row after a 1-0 loss against West Ham and a 2-0 defeat at home to Brighton.
Away from home it is just two wins from 11 games for Hodgson’s side and they have earned 8 points from a possible 33.
Team News:
Aston Villa: Ezri Konsa Ngoyo is serving a 2 game ban and won’t play here. Marvelous Nakamba is out with a knee injury, Bertrand Traore is out for a few more weeks with a hamstring injury.
Watford: Kwadwo Baah and Peter Etebo both are doubts with a lack of match fitness but could be assessed. Nicolas N’Koulou has a hamstring injury and isn’t scheduled to return until April.
Aston Villa vs Watford Head to Head:
The last time the clubs played here in 2020 Aston Villa won 2-1.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Watford won 3-2.
Watford have won 4 of the last five meetings.
There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.
Aston Villa vs Watford Prediction:
It’s hard to see where Watford’s next win is going to come from, certainly it doesn’t feel that it will be away from home. Having said that Villa need to pick themselves up, they have looked a little sluggish lately and if they were to drop points against Watford it would be very disappointing for them. We expect Watford to fight in this game and it could get physical and the odds of 5.00 on a red card could be good value in a game like this.
Villa are the odds on favourites and we will back them to win, they haven’t won many games lately and this could be the perfect game to end that unwanted run. We will back Phillpe Coutinho to get back on the score sheet after his blistering start for the club, his experience will be a constant threat to this Watford side who have conceded 43 goals this season only 3 clubs have conceded more.
Aston Villa vs Watford Betting Tips:
Aston Villa to beat Watford at 1.57
Anytime goalscorer: Phillpe Coutinho at 2.50
A red card to be shown in the game at 5.00
