Aston Villa vs Tottenham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 21st March 2021
Kick off at 7:30pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

Aston Villa’s form has not been among the best in the league in recent weeks but Dean Smith’s side still have the advantage of having one game in hand over their rivals and in some cases 2 games. This gives Villa some room for improvement and even though they come into this game in 9th, win the next couple and it could take them up to sixth.

Last weekend Villa drew away to Newcastle in a game that ended 1-1, and they have drawn their last two coming into this game. The club have just one win in their past four and have been anchored down in all fairness by a lack of consistency.

It’s been a week of nightmare proportions for Tottenham who lost against north London derby rivals Arsenal in the week and were then knocked out of the Europa League against Dinamo Zagreb. To rub salt into the wounds Tottenham were 2-0 up from the 1st leg but lost the 2nd match away from home 3-0. Manager Jose Mourinho actually looked devastated after the game and one could feel that the Portuguese believed that his side could win the competition- not any more, they are out.

Tottenham’s overall league form has been good with 3 wins from their last four but we must think only about the last week and how the players will be feeling and how disappointed Mourinho will be in them. Still if West Ham lose to Arsenal and Tottenham win they would go into 5th place and that has to be a huge motivation for the side.

Team News:

Aston Villa: Jack Grealish will face an assessment because of fitness issues and is only 50/50 to make this game. Kortney Hause is in line to return after his fitness issues following a long lay off. Bertrand Traore has a rib injury but is expected to be ready for this game.

Tottenham: Erik Lamela is suspended for this game after being sent off last weekend v Arsenal. Heung Min-Son missed the game in midweek with a muscle injury and is a major doubt for this one.

Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son have scored 4 goals combined against Aston Vila in the last 2 league meetings.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Prediction:

This game is about one word, reaction. That is what Jose Mourinho will want to see from his team and with so many close rivals in the league not playing this weekend Tottenham are more media exposed to what will happen at the weekend, there is no hiding place. In that this game has suddenly become Tottenham’s most important of the season so far. They could underline their intent for a top 4 finish or could actually start to slowly fade away out of contention. It is that serious.

Man for man Tottenham have the players to win the game but one has to wonder what sort of mental state the club are in after the way they went out of Europe? Aston Villa have a few key injuries and simply have not been in good form, however they are well rested compared to Tottenham who played 120 minutes of football on Thursday in Croatia, and now are away from home again.

The value on Aston villa is good, we're able to back them to win or draw. Tottenham have the better team, but morale will be low, they will be more tired, and they don't have home advantage. If there was a time for Villa to get something from a game against Tottenham, then this is the time.
