Aston Villa vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 21st December 2019
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

Aston Villa have some reasons to be cheerful coming into this game given that they have reached the semi finals of the Carabao Cup where they will play Leicester.

They needed that boost because in the league their form has really hit a wall and they come into this game with 3 consecutive defeats. They have conceded 8 goals in their last three matches and their last game ended in a 2-0 defeat away to Sheffield United.

Dean Smith’s side are in 17th place and the only reason they are not in the bottom three is due to goal difference. The club are simply struggling for consistency even at home where they have lost 2 of their last three games at Villa Park.

Southampton are in 18th with the same points as Villa, so this game is set to be a bottom half cracker. The Saints have lost their last two games and looked very average against an underperforming West Ham side last weekend when they lost that game 1-0 at St Mary's.

Away from home the Saints have only won 2 games from 8 and have lost 50% of their matches.

Team News:

Aston Villa: Keinan Davies is back in training but almost certainly won’t make this game after his hamstring injury he could be back next week. Tyrone Mings for the same reason has been ruled out.

Southampton: Kevin Danso is ill and could miss this game as a result. Moussa Djenpro is out with his hamstring. Yann Valery has a viral infection and he has been ruled out for the rest of the month

Aston Villa vs Southampton Head to Head:

The last time the teams met here was in 2016 when Southampton won 4-2.

The last 5 meetings have seen both teams to score.

There is a 50% chance to see over 3.5 goals.

Aston Villa vs Southampton Prediction:

Southampton tend to get better in the latter stages of games but by that time the match is usually beyond them. The Saints do have a good record here though and if they can remain disiplined it’s possible they can snatch a win. However we have a feeling for Aston Villa in this game due to the home advantage, the teams are fairly evenly matched so home advantage might just give Villa the edge, also most of Villa's away defeats have been against top sides (leicester and Chelsea). Danny Ings is a player on form and when he isn’t scoring he is having goals ruled out by VAR. Important to note is that he is fresh and having those chances, so could be worth a look on the goalscorer market.

Aston Villa vs Southampton Betting Tips:

Asian handicap (0.0 Aston Villa) at 1.84

Anytime goalscorer: Danny Ings at 2.05
