England Premier League
Saturday 21st August 2021
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
Both of these teams scored 2 goals on the opening weekend of the season and both lost.
Aston Villa were, at one point, 3 goals down to Watford it what was seen as a surprise result and the fight back was simply too late, literally with Danny Ings making it 3-2 in the 97th minute. It was disappointment from Villa’s perspective but at the same time away games may not be as easy as they were last season with fans back.
There will be pressure on Dean Smith’s side this weekend but at the same time with their own fans back at a roaring Villa Park Smith will demand a performance from his team.
Newcastle took the lead against West Ham and given that they had beaten the Hammers last season at St James Park the result may have looked certain. But not so and Newcastle imploded losing 4-2 in the end in an entertaining game. It was the thousandth reality check for Newcastle over the years and the worry is that perhaps that manager Steve Bruce has stayed on an extra season with the club than the fans would have wanted.
Still it is only the first game of the season but Newcastle did struggle for the majority of last season before coming good in the final 8 weeks and if they lose this game it is easy to get stuck down in the doldrums once again.
Team News:
Aston Villa: Ollie Watkins could be back from his minor knee injury and will be assessed. Trezeguet and Morgan Sanson are out long term. Douglas Luiz is being tipped to return after a lack of match fitness.
Newcastle: Martin Dubravka has a foot injury and is a doubt. Karl Darlow is a major doubt with a lack of match fitness.
Aston Villa vs Newcastle Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 2-0 to Aston Villa.
The last time the clubs played was back in March and that game ended 1-1.
Newcastle haven’t beaten Villa away from home since 2013.
The last 11 meetings have all ended in under 2.5 goals.
Aston Villa vs Newcastle Prediction:
This match looks good for a Villa win, back at home and they usually get the right result at home to Newcastle. But what will be most encouraging was the fight back last weekend, spirits would have been raised near the end even if it didn’t turn out to be the right result. Imagine if the game v Watford had finished 3-0, the mood in the Villa camp would have certainly been different.
Newcastle are the team who bounce back when you least expect it but the Magpies could really struggle on the road this season and probably will pick up their majority of the points at home. There are goals in the side but we expect Villa to ease to a win here and get the desired result and they are decent odds to do so.
Danny Ings is a great price at this time to score in the game, we would have expected slight odds on and his price could fall, so get on him and he will be full of confidence after scoring his first goal for his new club last weekend.
