Aston Villa vs Man Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 6th November 2022
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

Welcome back to the Premier League, Unai Emery! Emery is now manager of Aston Villa and he was expected to coach the club last week but had to wait for a new work permit and his game will now be against Manchester United. The good news is he will be loudly cheered on by home support.

Emery and Villa will need all the support they can get as they come into this weekend in 16th place and just 1 point above the relegation zone. Last weekend Villa lost their seventh game of the season as they fell to a heavy 4-0 loss at Newcastle and they have lost 3 of their last four games. Home form has been better recently with just one defeat in their last four and in their last home game they won 4-0 against Brentford.

Manchester United beat Real Sociedad in the Europa League 1-0 but they still finished 2nd in their group and will now face a Champions League drop out team next year. In the league Erik ten Hag has turned the form around for the club and at times we have seen brilliant play from United, something we have been accustomed to over the past 30 years. But there is still that feeling of transition and the team not being ready at all to challenge for a league title. They come into this game trailing league leaders Arsenal by 8 points but the objective this season is claiming a Champions League spot and they aren’t far behind at all, in fact only a point. The Red Devils beat West Ham last weekend.

On the road United have won 50% of their games and lost just once in their last five and would rank in 5th place based on away games alone. However because of their 6-3 defeat against Manchester City they have an inferior goal difference of four.

Team News:

Aston Villa: Ludwig Ausgustinsson and Boubacar Kamara have both recovered from injury but have a lack of match fitness and will be assessed. Emiliano Martinez received a head injury last week and remains a doubt to be ready for this game. Diego Carlos is out long term with his Achilles.

Manchester United: Antony has a knock and will be assessed. Bruno Fernandes is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. Anthony Martial could return but has some fitness issues, Jadon Sancho missed the game in midweek due to illness and will be assessed. Raphael Varane has a muscle injury and is out until after the World Cup.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 2-2.

Aston Villa have beaten Manchester United only two times in the last 46 games. Ironically both were at Old Trafford and we would have to go back to 1995 for the last time Villa won at home in a league game.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd Prediction:

Manchester United have improved, and together with having a team that has pace and can score goals, they have a new backbone and for now do not look fragile like they did at the beginning of the season. They certainly look very different than the back end of last season and are moving forward. However the problem they face is an Aston Villa team who were clearly dejected under Steven Gerrard, that was apparent as once he was sacked they beat Brentford 4-0. Of course they lost by the same score line against Newcastle in their next game but that was a tough game and away from home. Now they have the Unai Emery factor and he won’t want to lose his first game in charge. He will be rallying his players and this won’t be an easy game for United.

At the same time it may be a stretch to think that Villa will be able to get someting from this game but a better option could be backing the away side but with the draw covered on the refund just in case Villa prove stubborn resistence. United have had great results over Villa over the past 30 years but are probably facing them at the wrong time this weekend and could slip up and let’s of course factor in that the team had to travel to Spain in midweek, so covering the draw makes sense.
