Aston Villa vs Man City: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 6th December 2023
Kick off at 8:15pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

This could well be the clash of the midweek batch of games in the Premier League. Aston Villa will be taking on the champions but Villa have a 100% win record at home and are having a superb season as they come into this game in 4th place with 29 points they are only a point behind their visitors.

Villa did drop points at the weekend though as they could only draw 2-2 with Bournemouth but considering that they were losing they will probably have taken the draw and move on. Unai Emery’s side are unbeaten in their last three games and their last home game finished in a 3-1 victory over Fulham. The club have been excellent at home and have almost scored on average 4 goals per game here and only conceded five but of course this game will be a huge test for them.

Manchester City rarely go three games without a win but here we are- Pep Guardiola’s side have drawn their last three which have come against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham. All three draws would have felt like a defeat for the club and in all of those games they were winning. Last weekend there was controversy in their epic 3-3 draw with Tottenham. City believed that they had advantage after a foul on Erling Haaland but the referee had called them back, this after Jack Grealish raced clear for a one on one and possibly a goal. City will come into this game feeling hard done by but they will have to be at their best if they are to win here. The pressure is mounting too because a gap could quickly form, for now though there should be no panic but there is no denying that points are being lost.

Recent form for City has seen 9 points from 15 which isn’t a disaster for the majority of clubs but is telling from the champions. The club have won just two of their last five away games beating West Ham and Manchester United and their last away game was the 4-4 draw against Chelsea.

Team News:

Aston Villa: There are no new injuries for the club but Emiliano Buendia, Tyrone Mings and Bertrand Traore all remain out.

Manchester City: Rodri and Jack Grealish are both suspended for picking up their fifth yellow cards of the season. Jeremy Doku has a knock and will be assessed. Matheus Nunes remains a doubt with a muscle injury and Kevin De Bruyne is not due back for another 10 days due to his hamstring injury.

Aston Villa vs Man City Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 1-1.

Manchester City have won 10 of the last 11 meetings.

It’s been over 10 years since Aston Villa last beat Manchester City home or away.

There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.

Aston Villa vs Man City Prediction:

This is a game that could tell us where Manchester City are at as they try to win something that has never been achieved in the English game- four league titles in a row. Even defeat of course would not mean the end of their dream but it would be a significant blow and doubts may just start to creep in. In their three recent draws City have played outstanding football but they have also tended to lapse for ten minutes here and there and that has let other teams in.

We know how strong Aston Villa are but at the same time they haven’t faced strong teams at home so this is a huge test for Emery’s side. And that is the key word for this game, it is a test for both sides, one the champions and the other a team who are breaking the mould and aiming for a top four finish. City will be missing key players but they have replacements and a quality side. Pep has normally been able to find a Plan B and C when A fails, can he do so again?
