England Premier League
Friday 13th January 2023
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
From his first seven games in charge of Aston Villa Unai Emery has won 3 lost 3 and drawn one so it has certainly been an eventful time for the Spaniard so far. Villa are in 11th place and for now the club will be relieved after their nightmare start to the season. Not much will be expected of the club this season and if they were to finish in 11th and possibly have a deep cup run that would be satisfactory, bringing in Emery was all about surviving a storm.
However, deep cup runs have been cut short this season and by the most unlikely of teams in Stevenage who beat Villa 2-1 away from home in the FA Cup. Villa looked to be going through after they scored early on and with just two minutes left the Premier League side seemed confident but they were stunned by two goals in two minutes. How will the players react and bounce back from that? Emery has a brilliant cup record and personally he would have been devastated by the result. Still progress has been made this season and while the club cannot change position even if they win this game they could well join Chelsea on the same points if the Blues have lost their game against Fulham a day before.
Villa’s form is good with just the one loss in their last five games and they have won 10 points from their last 15 on offer. At home they have won 4 games from 9 but have gone their last two games here without victory, their last match at home finished in a 1-1 draw with Wolves.
Leeds are in 14th place but that only means they are 2 points above the bottom three and they are certainly one of the teams that could get dragged into a relegation battle like last season. For a team that has lost 8 times already this season it is encouraging that they have gone their last two games without defeat, no wins but two draws which have come against Newcastle and West Ham.
The worry for Jesse Marsch’s side has been their away form with just 1 win so far and that would rank them in 18th place. They are also conceding 2 goals per game on average. Their sole win so far came against of all sides Liverpool and they were impressive to get a 0-0 draw against Newcastle in their last away game.
Team News:
Aston Villa: Ludwig Augustinsson and Matthew Cash will be assessed for slight knocks. Leander Dendoncker is suspended for his red card in the last game. John McGinn will be assessed following a hamstring injury.
Leeds: Patrick Bamford could miss out again due to fitness issues and he is only 50/50 to return. Adam Forshaw could return from a hip injury. Archie Gray looks set to miss out again as he recovers from an ankle injury it is the same problem for Luis Sinisterra and both players are major doubts to recover for this game.
Aston Villa vs Leeds Head to Head:
Last season we saw a six goal thriller as both teams drew 3-3.
It’s been 5 games since Leeds have beaten Aston Villa.
In the reverse fixture earlier this season the game finished 0-0.
There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Aston Villa vs Leeds Prediction:
The game preparation will be all about Emery settling down his players after their shock FA Cup exit to Stevenage and in the sting in the tail is that it happened right here at home. Fans will be expecting a reaction but of course Leeds can offer more than Stevenage and have been able to frustrate teams of late. On paper Villa have enough in the tank to win this game being at home but this looks fairly equal and we are expecting a tight duel.
Rodrigo for Leeds has been working hard and Marsch needs his team to score more goals but he has performed well on the road and will be great value to score in this game. The goalscorers market could be the overall best option for this game and for Villa look out for Phillipe Coutinho. The former Liverpool player has blown hot and cold for Villa this season but he has a knack of scoring goals against Leeds.
