Aston Villa vs Everton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 23rd August 2019
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

Friday night Premier League games are starting early this season and the second one will see newly promoted Aston Villa take on Top 6 chasing Everton.

Villa are searching for their first win of the season after losing their two opening games. The first against Tottenham away from home was expected although they were leading that game with just twenty minute to go before they ran out of steam and went on to lose 3-1. But the disappointing result came last weekend when at home they lost 2-1 to Bournemouth. Although Villa did have plenty of chances and were arguably the best team, they were 2-0 down within the first quarter of an hour and were never able to recover.

The hard fixtures continue for Villa, and even though they are at home they will be weary of hosting the very experienced Everton who should be able to cause Dean Smith’s team a lot of problems.

Marco Silva’s Everton side have started with 4 points from two games, but in some ways have been relatively quiet. The Toffee men hardly conceded any goals in pre-season and didn’t score much and that seems to have mirrored the beginning of their season. A 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace was followed by a 1-0 home win over Watford and it means that Everton are the only club in the Premier League after 2 games not to have conceded a goal, which is not something you would normally associate with a Marco Silva team.

Team News:

Aston Villa: James Chester is out until the end of the month with a hamstring injury. Kortney Hause has an ankle injury and looks like he will miss the rest of the month the exact same injury has happened to Jonathan Kodjia who will miss the rest of the month

Everton: Leighton Baines is 50/50 to return after his knock but his injury keeps getting delayed. Fabian Delph has a groin injury and was expected back for this game but there has been no update on his situation. Lucas Digne has a knock but could make the first team.

Aston Villa vs Everton Head to Head:

The teams have not played each other since 2016, and the last time was at Villa Park when Everton won 3-1.

Everton have won 5 of the last 6 meetings.

The teams have previously met 13 times this decade with Villa winning just 2 of those games, their last win over Everton was in 2015.

There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.

Aston Villa vs Everton Prediction:

Villa need the points and something from this game. In their first game they ran out of energy and collapsed against Tottenham. In their second they were naive at the back early on. This tells us that Villa need to start on the front foot, if they don’t and they let Everton into the game then it will be a long afternoon for them. Having said that Everton are not scoring goals, and whilst it is good for the club that they are not conceding one could look to the fact that in 2 games Everton have only had 5 shots on target.

This game then remains unpredictable and the bookmakers think so to, it’s why Everton are the favourites but are not odds on. Still we will take the small risk on the away team to win but with the draw covered, based on the fact that when all said and done Villa have not had a good start to their campaign despite showing some promise.
