Aston Villa vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 21st June 2020
Kick off at 4.15pm BST
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

Aston Villa got a valuable point in midweek when they drew 0-0 at home to Sheffield United. As they well know they got away with it and should have lost the game, or at least at the time fallen behind. But hawk eye made its first mistake in 9,000 times and a goal wasn’t given.

Villa had played some decent football as they tried to chase the win and the club, at this time, look in good spirits as they try to survive the relegation battle. The draw also ended a 4 game losing streak for Dean Smith’s side but they are still 19th with 26 points. If results go their way they would climb out of the bottom three with a win here but they will be facing a formidable opponent in Chelsea.

Chelsea are in 4th place and clinging onto that final Champions League position. They have legitimate threats from 3 clubs, Manchester United, Wolves and Sheffield United and that’s not counting Tottenham if they can get a run of wins together.

The Blues have just made their intent for next season by signing brilliant German striker Timo Werner. That would have raised the bar at the club and it is clear that Frank Lampard sees a vision for the club and will be determined for them to qualify for the Champions League with Werner incoming.

Chelsea’s last game before the pandemic was a 4-0 win over Everton and they have gone their last 3 games unbeaten. If Leicester can beat Watford, Chelsea would dearly need this win, and if the Foxes lose Chelsea could close the gap to 3rd to just 2 points, so there is all to play for here.

Team News:

Aston Villa: Daniel Drinkwater has a knock and is not expected to make this game but could face a late test. Bjorn Engels is out with an achilles injury.

Chelsea: Jorginho is serving a 2 game ban and is suspended from this match, other than that there are no reported major injuries with the club ahead of this game.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Earlier this season in the reverse fixture Chelsea beat Aston Villa 2-1.

The last time the clubs played at Villa Park was back in 2016 when Chelsea won 4-0.

Chelsea have won the last 5 meetings in a row.

Aston Villa have not beaten Chelsea since 2014.

There is an 80% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea Prediction:

Chelsea are by far the better team and this should, in theory, be a straight forward away win. However with the club not playing a professional game in 3 months and no fans we have to see how the players will deal with this. Villa will have their chances but overall they usually come off second best over Chelsea and have had some painful results in the last 10 years, no one is going to forget the 8-0 and 7-1 score lines in a hurry. We don’t expect to see a big score line on Sunday though and more of a workmanlike performance from Chelsea who have become the kings of churning out a 2-0 or 2-1 result, even when not playing their best football.

Of course it is unclear how the break will affect the favourites for this game, so caution is needed, but the away win looks like being the main choice for this game.
