England Premier League
Sunday 28th May 2023
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
Both clubs can look back on their seasons with immense pride but for now it is only Brighton who have secured European qualification for next season, by the end of the game it could be both sides.
Brighton are in 6th place and cannot finish any higher than that after a magnificent campaign. It threatened to be up-ended when Graham Potter left for Chelsea and the talented Leandro Trossard was snapped up by Arsenal but actually the train kept rolling and by all accounts under Roberto De Zerbi the club actually got better. It’s just one defeat in their last four although that was a heavy 5-1 game against Everton but the Seagulls have rallied well since that with a superb 3-0 win away to Arsenal which effectively ended the Gunners title chances and in midweek they secured Europa League qualification by drawing against Manchester City.
Aston Villa under Unai Emery have had a tremendous second half to the season and it is in their hands in 7th place to grab the final European place. They have 58 points but Tottenham and Brentford could go past the Villains if they slip up here and only a win will guarantee that they get the final European position. Form has been a mixed bag for Emery’s side but they have been able to go their last two games without defeat after beating Tottenham and drawing against Liverpool. The draw against Liverpool in a game that ended 1-1 was seen as impressive given that it was the Reds last home game of the season and they were actually very close to winning that game. The most encouraging news for Villa has been their home form and they have won their last 5 in a row beating quality sides at the same time in Tottenham and Newcastle.
Team News:
Aston Villa: Phillipe Coutinho (knock) and Alex Moreno (hamstring) are out for the season.
Brighton: Soloman March is struggling with a hamstring and remains a major doubt to return now. Jeremy Sarimento, Jakub Moder, Adam Lallana and Tariq Lamptley are out for the season.
Aston Villa vs Brighton Head to Head:
Last season Aston Villa won this fixture 2-0.
Aston Villa have won the last 3 meetings in a row.
There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.
Aston Villa vs Brighton Prediction:
We will back Aston Villa to win this game as they are the only side playing for something. In fact while Brighton are in 6th place the reality is that even if they were to lose this game they would still be in sixth place! This is Villa’s last home game and we expect quite an atmosphere as the famous club attempts to qualify for Europe once again.
Villa’s home form has been excellent and while they will be up against a strong opponent it is one who can now play without any pressure, that can work both ways of course but we don’t expect to see the home team lose this one not after all of their efforts to get into this position in the first place. Home form is very strong also and we will also be looking into the goalscorers markets. Ollie Watkins is showing good form just like he did earlier in the season and he has scored 2 goals past Brighton in their last three meetings, he is also good value to score at the weekend, so get on him.
