England Premier League
Tuesday 21st July 2020
Kick off at 8:15pm BST
Venue: Villa Park
Match Preview:
And so Championship football looms for Dean Smith’s side and this is not the match the club would want to be playing at this time.
Aston Villa have been in the relegation zone for an extended time and really struggled to get going this season, though there was some early promise. Villa simply haven’t seen the best of Jack Grealish who promised so much, maybe he needs a new challenge, or simply the level of the Premier League was too much for him? But Villa have lost over 20 games this season and that is going to equal relegation on more occasions than not. Their form since the restart has been very poor and at home they have the 3rd to worst record in the league. They have conceded 30 goals and only 2 other teams have shipped in more when at home.
Arsenal’s challenge keeps coming for Europe and in general they have recovered from a slow restart. They are unpredictable though with one week looking good and the other more like Unai Emery is still there and they are standing still. The Gunners have really been anchored this season in mostly going in front and not being able to hold a lead. However that was not the case at the weekend with an impressive 2-0 FA Cup semi final win over Man City.
They will of course be favourites to win this match but their away form needs to be questioned. The Gunners problem this season playing away actually hasn’t been the amount of games they have lost but the amount they have drawn. Almost 50% of their games have ended in draws and overall they have the most draws in the league.
Team News:
Aston Villa: Bjorn Engels, Wesley and Tom Heaton all remain unavailable to play. Neil Taylor is doubtful for this encounter.
Arsenal: Arsenal have numerous long term injuries, and now Mustafi is a doubt for this game.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal Head to Head:
Earlier in the season the teams were involved in a five goal thriller at the Emirates that ended 3-2 to Arsenal.
In the league the clubs have not played at Villa Park since 2015 when Arsenal won 2-0.
Arsenal have won the last 6 league meetings between the teams.
Aston Villa have not beaten Arsenal since 2013.
There is an 80% chance to see over 2.5 goals.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal Prediction:
This is a fixture packed with goals and we don’t see that stopping for this game. Villa will have to go for it and try and beat Arsenal in order to close the gap on Watford, whilst the Gunners on their day are still a magnificent attacking team. A lot of work has gone in on the training park with Mikel Arteta seemingly getting the best out of the players and this is the type of game where you would expect Arsenal to get all three points.
We think this game presents an opportunity for Arsenal to show their qualities and we think they can score a few goals here and are confident to take them to win this game.
