England Premier League
Thursday 28th December 2023
Kick off at 8:15pm GMT
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Match Preview:
Arsenal have been playing a yo-yo game at the top of the Premier League and with Liverpool beating Burnley over the Christmas period it means that the Gunners come into this game having slipped down to 2nd place. No fear for Mikel Arteta’s team who will be chasing their first league title in 20 years as they would go back on top by 1 point if they beat West Ham at home. Current form for Arsenal has not been good for a side who have title ambitions with 4 points earned from their last 9, however that does include earning a 1-1 draw away to Liverpool at a ground that they normally lose on. There has also been a recent defeat away to Aston Villa. At home though, well that does tell a different story and the club are unbeaten after 9 games played with seven wins and two draws, they have also won their last 5 here in a row with their latest game ending a 2-0 win over Brighton.
West Ham are one of the form sides in the league having won 3 of their last four games including back to back victories coming into this one against Wolves and Manchester United. They have managed to score 5 goals in those matches and keep clean sheets too. The victory over Manchester United felt significant and despite being under pressure from the fans manager David Moyes continues to coach a side who can get results. The Hammers have crept up to 7th place and have 30 points they would go into sixth with a win here and go past Manchester United. Away form has not been as strong as home but the Hammers have won 4 games but also lost 4. This includes 3 defeats from their last five trips and they will not want to be reminded of their latest away game which finished in a 5-0 loss against Fulham.
Team News:
Arsenal: Kai Havertz is suspended for this game after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. Fabio Vieira isn’t expected back for at least 3 weeks with his groin injury. Thomas Partey is out for the same amount of time with a muscle injury. Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu are both sidelined with no fixed return date.
West Ham: Nayef Aguerd and Maxwell Cornet will be assessed due to illness which forced them both to miss the club's game at the weekend. Michail Antonio remains a doubt but is back in training following a knee injury and could be assessed.
Arsenal vs West Ham Head to Head:
Last season Arsenal won this fixture 3-1.
It’s been 8 years since West Ham beat Arsenal away from home.
The last 4 meetings in a row have all seen over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
Arsenal vs West Ham Prediction:
The last time the teams played at the Emirates was this time last year and during the Christmas period that is interesting and as we have mentioned above Arsenal won 3-1 and we can see the Gunners repeating that performance. West Ham have proven to be hit and miss on the road and have been strong at times but they have come up short especially away in these fixtures and we see only one winner here. Arsenal seem locked in and focused compared to last season and they won’t want Liverpool to have an advantage at all going into the new year. There is also the matter that Manchester City will still have a game in hand and remain a genuine threat. Not many clubs are going to come to Arsenal and get any points and we expect Arsenal to get through this test and remain unbeaten at home.
