Arsenal vs West Ham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 26th December 2022
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

There will be a lot of attention on Arsenal as they aim to surprise everyone and win the league title this season. They have been in control so far and ended the break 5 points in front of the champions and chasing team Manchester City. They could go 8 points clear here as City do not play until midweek.

The World Cup has meant blows for the Gunners though and we will go into more detail in the team news but Gabriel Jesus who has been so important for them is out. Arsenal have only lost 1 game so far and have won 4 from their last five and earned 13 points in that time. They won their last two games before the break as they beat Chelsea and Wolves. At home they are the only side to have a 100% record, played 6 and won 6 and they are averaging just over 3 goals per game.

West Ham have been disappointing given the players they have added to the squad and it seemed like the only way for the club to go was up. However they come into this game in 16th place with 14 points and have lost their last 3 games. One of those was against Manchester United, which can be expected but they have also lost to Crystal Palace and Leicester recently and manager David Moyes seems to be skating on thin ice. It doesn’t make for great reading for the Hammers to see that they have lost 9 of their 15 games so far though.

Team News:

Arsenal: Gabriel Jesus is out with a knee injury although there has been no time frame put on his return some reports have suggested that it could be 4-5 weeks. Reiss Nelson is out with a muscle injury for at least a month. Oleksandr Zinchenko is only 50/50 to return due to a muscle injury.

West Ham: Nayef Aguerd has a groin injury and will be assessed. Michail Antonio has a thigh injury but is expected to recover. Maxwell Cornet remains a doubt wth his calf. Gianluca Scamacca has an ankle injury and will be assessed. Kurt Zouma remains a major doubt with his knee.

Arsenal vs West Ham Prediction:

This game is always such a fiery London derby and through the years the Hammers have surprised Arsenal and risen their game. Perhaps the break was needed for Moyes and his team but this is hardly the easiest return game they could have picked. Despite some key injuries we don’t see past Arsenal getting the win here, this is a huge opportunity for them to pull clear. The quality of this Arsenal side is still very dangerous and the pace of the team should be too much for West Ham.

We expect a very open game and the Hammers will have their chances, but the worry one gets with Moyes is that he can set up his teams away from home against the top six sides in order not to lose and that can make his teams look afraid to play. This may frustrate the Gunners at times during the game but we don’t think it can keep Mikel Arteta’s side at bay for too long.
