England Premier League
Saturday 23rd April 2022
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Match Preview:
After poor form Arsenal responded in the best possible way in midweek as they were involved in an entertaining 4-2 win at Chelsea. The Gunners were the underdogs to get anything at the Blues and that was ten fold given that they were coming into that game having lost their last 3.
Arsenal will face more tough opposition as they take on a top 4 rival in Manchester United and even though the teams are not top of the tree anymore this game is still one of the biggest and most famous fixtures in the Premier League.
Arsenal’s win over Chelsea means that they are still in 5th place but they have 57 points the same as Tottenham and have played the same games. Manchester United are three points behind Arsenal coming into this game and have played a game more so if they were to lose this match it would probably be fair to say that United’s top 4 hopes would be dashed. At home Mikel Arteta’s side have the 3rd best home record in the league with 10 wins from 16 games and have lost just four times. The bad news is that two of those defeats have come in their last two home games.
It has been a difficult season for United who were reminded of how inferior they have become against the top sides and in midweek they were easily brushed away 4-0 at Liverpool. This is a fixture that is usually hard to call but in recent years it has been an easy one and United have conceded 9 goals in the league against Liverpool. Form wise the Red Devils have won just one in their last four and have conceded six goals in their last two. There is a real possibility that Ralf Rangnick’s side may not even qualify for Europe this season and inconsistency has dogged them throughout. Away form has seen the club win six games but recently they have lost three in a row and we would have to go back to the clubs 4-2 win over Leeds 2 months ago to see their last win on the road.
Team News:
Arsenal: Tomiyasu Takehiro has been out with a calf injury but he is 50/50 to return for this game and will be assessed. Kieran Tierney (knee) and Thomas Partey (thigh) are out long term.
Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt because of personal reasons which saw the Portuguese star miss the game v Liverpool. Fred is out for two weeks with a hip injury. Paul Pogba is a major doubt with his calf. Luke Shaw has a leg injury and will be assessed, Raphael Varane is 50/50 to return from his knock and Edinson Cavani is out for another two weeks due to his calf injury.
Arsenal vs Man Utd Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 0-0.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Manchester United won 3-2.
5 of the last six meetings have ended in under 2.5 goals.
Arsenal vs Man Utd Prediction:
This should be an electric game from the kick off with both sides needing the win. Arsenal have been unpredictable lately and thrown points away against teams you would have expected them to beat. However the win over Chelsea surely would have re-installed confidence to the Gunners.
If we talk about trust both of these teams have looked untrustworthy when it comes to backing them this season, but United have been a real let down when you think of the quality they have in attack and midfield. This feels like United’s last chance at a top 4 finish and in normal years you would be backing the team to show the correct mental strength and backbone. But how many times have we been let down by them? There are little surprises now and we will fancy Arsenal to take the points here. This is a top 4 race that could well come down to Tottenham and Arsenal and things could well be much clearer by the end of this weekend.
