England Premier League
Sunday 8th October 2023
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Match Preview:
This week's Premier League clashes will finish with a huge one as the top two sides from last season will take each on and there will be fireworks for sure. Arsenal suffered disappointment in midweek in the Champions League as they went to France and lost 2-1 at Lens although in the league Mikel Arteta’s side have started very well. Given that Manchester City lost last weekend the Gunners were able to make up some lost points as they thrashed Bournemouth away from home 4-0 and they enter this weekend in 3rd place and have 17 points and are just a single point behind City. This match really couldn’t be set up any better.
At home Arsenal have dropped some points though with draws against Tottenham and Fulham but like Tottenham they are the only side not to have been beaten yet. Manchester City are a power unit in Europe which was proven again in midweek as they came back to beat RB Leipzig away from home 3-1. Erling Haaland isn’t scoring as many goals as he did this time last season and the Norwegian has actually come under pressure for this but perhaps it should be remembered that he is currently the league’s top goalscorer with 8 goals. Secretly Haaland will be relishing the criticism and that is when he could well be at his most dangerous. He was here last season and he is on course to break his goal tally record of 36 from last season.
Are there problems at City though, not so much in their style of play as they have had a strong start but they have gaps in midfield due to injury and suspension as mentioned below and that can be telling. It was last weekend as they were shocked losing 2-1 away to Wolves to lose their first game of the season, however the good news is that Pep Guardiola’s side are still in 1st place.
Team News:
Arsenal: Gabriel Martinelli has a 50/50 chance to return after his muscle injury, Bukayo Saka should return from the same injury and is being tipped too. Jurrien Timber remains out long term with a knee injury.
Manchester City: Rodri is suspended and won’t return for two weeks, Bernardo Silva has a lack of match fitness and will be assessed. It is the same case for John Stones. Kevin De Bruyne is out until December with a hamstring issue.
Arsenal vs Man City Head to Head:
Last season Manchester City won this fixture 3-1.
Manchester City have won the last 8 competitive meetings against Arsenal in a row although the Gunners did win the Community Shield in August.
The last three meetings have seen both teams to score.
Arsenal vs Man City Prediction:
It’s been almost 8 years since Arsenal beat Manchester City at home and given how strong the Gunners are here that is quite remarkable. City have certainly had Arsenal’s number for some time and if they come into this game like some of their away matches this season and do not start strongly they will have plenty of problems at Arsenal. We expect the home side to be aggressive and warrant the possession game and of course they will be dangerous coming forward and will have plenty of chances. We really can’t see this game finishing 0-0 but have Arsenal kept on learning or will they make the same mistakes? Yes they gave City a good run for their money last season before imploding but let’s remind ourselves that City put seven goals past Arsenal last season. It’s true a lot can change but if City can learn themselves for even last weekend that they need to sap it up sometimes and adapt then we think that Guardiola’s team could well dent Arsenal’s title chances again and could be unbeatable at the weekend. Expect Haaalnd back on the score sheet too.
