Venue: Emirates Stadium
Match Preview:
Arsenal will be looking for revenge after being thrashed at Liverpool earlier in the season and with a very solid home record many will feel that the Gunners can get something here.
Long gone are the days that Arsenal are challenging for the league title but under Mikel Arteta there has been steady progress this season and the club are looking to finish in 4th place and qualify for next season’s Champions League. Currently the Gunners are favourites to finish 4th and with 51 points they are a point clear of 5th placed Manchester United but have 3 games in hand over them, this is one of those games. Arsenal are in superb form and have won their last 5 games and last weekend they eased to a 2-0 victory at home against Leicester.
Such is Arsenal’s form if they were to win this game thoughts could even turn to finishing 3rd as they are 8 points behind Chelsea but have two games in hand over the troubled Blues. Arsenal have the 3rd best home record in the league and have only lost twice so far with their last defeat occurring over two months ago as they narrowly lost to Manchester City 1-0.
Like Arsenal, Liverpool are in superb form too and they have taken 25 points from their last 10 games as they try and win their second league title in three years. The Reds were given a huge boost on Monday evening as league leaders Manchester City dropped two points away to Crystal Palace as that game finished 0-0. It means that Liverpool are just four points behind but have this game in hand to try and reduce the gap to just a single point and the two teams will play each other in three weeks time.
Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0 away from home in their last game and from a possible 42 points the Reds have collected 30 on the road. They are unbeaten away from home so far this year and come into this game having won their last 3. By far Liverpool have scored the most goals on the road with 36.
Team News:
Arsenal: There are no fresh injuries for the Gunners and only Takehiro Tomiyasu is a doubt with his on going calf injury but is rated as 50/50 to return.
Liverpool: Mohamed Salah has a foot injury and is a doubt, but will be assessed. Ibrahima Konate has a knock but is being pencilled in to return for this game.
Arsenal vs Liverpool Head to Head:
Last season in this fixture Liverpool won 3-0 and the teams also played in London in January in the EFL Cup and the Reds also won that 2-0.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Liverpool won 4-0.
It’s been 8 games since Arsenal beat Liverpool in a league game.
Arsenal have not scored against Liverpool in almost 2 years.
Arsenal vs Liverpool Prediction:
It’s no surprise to learn that Liverpool have dominated Arsenal in recent seasons and playing the Reds has been problematic for the Gunners. But we should respect Arsenal’s home form and the news that Mohamed Salah may miss out will be a huge boost for Arsenal. It is worth checking the very final team news if Salah is absent but such is his presence that his loss will be felt.
There are of course many more attacking options for Liverpool in the form of Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz who has started his career at Liverpool very well. But Arsenal have pace and they will cause Liverpool a lot of problems. The Gunners have only lost one game this year at home and even then in a match against the champions Manchester City they were the better team and were unlucky not to win the game.
Of course Liverpool know what they have to do after seeing Manchester City drop points but the price of the home side looks too good value to turn down. The Gunners are strong at home and are due to get a good result against Liverpool and are in great form. It will take a very special performance even from Liverpool to come away from London with a win in midweek.
