England Premier League
Sunday 4th February 2024
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Match Preview:
Sunday will see a huge clash and by the end of it we will know a little more about Arsenal’s title chances. Arsenal will be at home when they take on Liverpool in what should be a mouthwatering game. Arsenal are chasing their first league title in 20 years and come into this game in 3rd place with 46 points and are five points behind league leaders Liverpool. With victory it would put the Gunners right back in the mix, only two points behind the Reds and into 2nd place and past Manchester City at least until Monday when the champions play.
Arsenal had a poor end to the year but they have won their last two league games in a row, first they smashed Crystal Palace 5-0 and then beat Nottingham Forest 2-1. Of course these two sides met in this fixture just last month in the FA Cup and despite Arsenal playing well they lost 2-0 so there could be some revenge on the minds of players and manager. At the Emirates Arsenal have won 8 from 11 games and lost just once which was recently against West Ham but they have won 4 of their last five home games.
Liverpool have won 15 of their 22 games so far and have only lost once and yet they have Manchester City and Arsenal snapping on their heels. If they can win here it will feel huge and an 8 point gap to the Gunners would feel very significant. Liverpool’s form has been near perfect and they have won their last 4 games in a row. Their last game finished in a 4-1 home win over Chelsea and four goals were scored again in their last away match as they blasted Bournemouth 4-0. In fact the Reds have scored 4 goals in each of their last three games and with Manchester City they have scored the most goals in the league which currently sits at 51. The bad news for Arsenal is that Liverpool have the best away record in the league with 22 points won from a possible 33, and they have also won their last four games in a row and are averaging almost 2 goals per game scored on the road. As you may have guessed there is very little to nitpick at Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Team News:
Arsenal: Fabio Vieira has recovered from injury but has fitness issues and is only 50/50 to make this game. Takehiro Tomiyasu is on international duty. Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey are out with respective knee and muscle injuries and no fixed return dates
Liverpool: Darwin Nunez is a doubt with a foot injury but he will be assessed before the game. Mohamed Salah is out for the next two weeks due to a hamstring injury he picked up on international duty. Wataru Endo is on international duty. Konstantinos Tsimikas has a shoulder injury and is out but he could return next week. Thiago Alcantara won’t return until near the end of the month with a hip injury, Ben Doak is out long term with a knee injury, Stefan Bajcetic is out for two weeks with his calf injury and Joel Matip is likely to miss the rest of the season due to his knee injury
Arsenal vs Liverpool Head to Head:
The last time the clubs met here was only last month in the FA Cup and Liverpool won 2-0.
Last season in this fixture Arsenal won 3-2.
Arsenal have won only 1 game against Liverpool in the last 10 meetings.
There is a 70% chance not to see both teams to score in league games.
Arsenal vs Liverpool Prediction:
Arsenal played good football in their recent FA Cup loss and we can imagine that Mikel Arteta’s side will be very much up for this game. They are the home side and need to be aggressive and play as well as they know they can. This is why we will back them to get the win (with the draw covered on the refund) and only inflict Liverpool’s 2nd defeat of the season. A club of Arsenal’s ambitions cannot let the league title slip by the beginning of February and make no mistakes if they lose here and if Manchester City win tomorrow maybe Arsenal can kiss goodbye to a title challenge. They are at home, they know they can play and raise their level and this is the moment they need to do so.
At the same time Liverpool have been here and seen it before and they will be a hard side to beat. Arsenal need to play their absolute A game to win here and we think they can produce the goods, if not then Mikel Arteta has not progressed his side in the right way.
