Arsenal vs Everton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 23rd April 2021
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

It has been a week where Arsenal have had to do the rarest of things and issue an apology to their fans over the clubs sign up for the Super League. Arsenal have now withdrawn from the proposed competition and will want to put this episode behind them but there may be further implications and it won’t be so easy to just pretend it didn’t happen.

In the Gunners last game they looked toothless as they drew 1-1 with Fulham getting their equaliser in the 97th minute as they looked like losing their 7th game at home. Arsenal were heavily criticised for their display against the team in 18th place and a 3-0 win over Sheffield United remains Arsenal’s only victory from their past four games.

This match will see 9th v 8th and the Gunners would overtake Everton with a win here on goal difference. But Arsenal continue to under perform at home, where they have won just 7 points from their last 15, with recent defeats against Liverpool and Manchester City at the Emirates.

Everton have the faintest of hopes of a top four place because they have a game in hand over their direct rivals, but defeat on Friday and wins for those teams above them would surely be the final nail in any of those hopes for the club. Everton come into this game having drawn their last 3 with their latest result finishing in a 2-2 draw at home against Tottenham. The concern for the club is that they have gone five games without a win, with their last victory coming against West Bromwich Albion at the beginning of March.

However Everton have been impressive away from home and 30 of their 49 points have come this way. The club have lost 3 games from 15 and won 9 of those, recent form is a worry for Carlo Ancelotti though, with their last away game finishing 0-0 against Brighton.

Team News:

Arsenal: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has sat out the last couple of matches as he has malaria. He is being pencilled in to return for this game but will have to be assessed. Alexandre Lacazette is expected to be fine after picking up a minor hamstring injury, but will face a test before confirmation. Martin Odegaard has sat out the last couple of matches due to his ankle injury but could return for this game. There is no update on David Luiz and his knee injury and he could miss this game. Kieran Tierney is out for at least another 3 weeks with his knee injury.

Everton: Andre Gomes was expected back in Everton’s last game but didn’t make the cut, he is set to be fine for this one after a lack of match fitness. Bernard is being pencilled in to return from his knock but remains only at 50/50. Dominic Calvert-Lewin will face a test but should return for this game after his groin injury. Fabian Delph has a chance to return for this game after recovering from his tendon injury. Yerry Mina is being pencilled in to return after picking up a muscle injury. Abdoulaye Doucoure is out for at least another 3 weeks with a foot injury and Jean-Phillipe Gbamin is out for the season and not due to return for another six weeks due to his knee injury.

Arsenal vs Everton Head to Head:

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Everton won 2-1.

Last season this fixture ended 3-2 to Arsenal.

Everton haven’t beaten Arsenal in London since 1996, two months before Arsene Wenger became manager for the Gunners.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Arsenal vs Everton Prediction:

Everton’s record over Arsenal away from home is appalling there is no getting away from that. One wonders what version of Everton we will see on Friday evening? Everton have developed some good habits away from home this season and the last time they were in north London they beat Tottenham at the beginning of the season. Indeed this has been a season to set old ghosts and Everton won at Anfield for the first time since 1999, surely a win over Arsenal in London is well over due?

Everton will get that win if Arsenal put in the same display they did against Fulham but manager Mikel Arteta will be demanding extra from his players. The problem is that some key players could be missing for the club and Everton look like they will be welcoming back the bulk of their injuries. You get the feeling that the Gunners could be more concentrated on the Europa League now having reached the semi-finals. If Everton can control the pace of the game they have a chance at very good odds to win this game. However we must remember that the Toffees do not come into this game with the best form.
