Match Preview:

For a good few months Arsenal have had a game in hand over 2nd placed Manchester City and it has served as their joker card, now on Wednesday evening they are about to play it.

This represents a huge game for both sides so we should see quite a spectacle but for Arsenal this is all about advancing in their quest to win their first league title in 19 years. Currently the Gunners are just 2 points clear of Manchester City but would go 5 clear with a win and the same games played. City’s rivals Manchester United will be keeping an eye on this game too because if Arsenal were to win that would dent their faint hopes of a surprise title challenge.

Last weekend Arsenal made it back to back wins after a few wobbly weeks as they beat Leicester 1-0 away from home. While recent form hasn’t been the best at home the Gunners remain a formiddable side with 8 wins and just one defeat so far which came against Manchester City. While overall home form has been strong it’s just one win in their last 4 here with their latest game at the Emirates finishing in a 1-1 draw against Brentford.

Everton lost their 3rd game in five last weekend as they went down 2-0 at home to Aston Villa. It was a disappointing result given that manager Sean Dyche has only overseen four games so far, 2 wins and 2 defeats. In fairnss Dyche has had some difficult fixtures having to face Arsenal already in which Everton won 1-0 just a few weeks ago and that was followed up by the Merseyside derby and a defeat. Aston Villa have been a mixed bag this season but perhaps are Everton’s bogey team given that the Toffees have not been able to beat them in seven years. Arsenal though are another team that Everton rarely beat espeically away from home and this looks like it will be an incredibly difficult game for Dyche and his team.

The worries are real for Everton who come into this game in 18th place and while they are just 1 point from safety if they lose here then they would have played an extra game than all of the other teams around them. So far away from home Everton have won 7 points from a possible 33 with just one win so far and they have only managed to score six times only Nottingham Forest have a worse record goals wise.

Team News:

Arsenal: Gabriel Jesus is back in training but isn’t expected to return for this one but could be back by the weekend. Mohamed Elneny is out long term with his knee.

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin has recovered from injury but has some fitness worries and looks like a major doubt for this game but could return at the weekend. James Garner looks set to miss out again with fitness issues. Nathan Patterson could be assessed but is likely to miss out with fitness issues, Andros Townsends remains sidelined.

Arsenal vs Everton Head to Head:

Earlier this month in the reverse fixture Everton won 1-0.

Last season Arsenal won this fixture 5-1.

Everton beat Arsenal away from home in 2021 but it was behind closed doors, if we don’t take that win into account the last time Everton won here under normal circumstances was in 1996.

Arsenal have won 4 of the last five meetings.

Arsenal vs Everton Prediction:

Arsenal will want to avenge their defeat a few weeks ago but more than that this game represents such a huge chance for Mikel Arteta’s side to create a decent gap over Manchester City and we think they will get it. Arsenal have a fantastic history over Everton when playing at home and Everton have had some nightmare results here too. The pace and quality in this Arsenal side should be too much for Everton. Of course we are talking about two teams who met so recently with Everton winning but that is the effect of passion and psychology to the maximum limit with Sean Dyche having his first game in charge. Had Dyche been in the dugout for a month beforehand would we have seen a different performance from Everton? We believe so.

The worry for Everton is the six goals scored away from home and how do you improve on that when you are facing the best side in the country currently and have no real quality up front? Evening away games can be very difficult too and while that doesn’t mean that Everton can’t dig in and surprise, the liklihood is that Dyche’s side are going to be run ragged.
